please guys, this is basic but confusing me. Should the coolant hose at the top of the engine that collects the coolant from the heads and sends it off to the pipes that run down the length of the car, be empty or full when the engine is cold? Mine seems like its full of air, and I've got the feeling this is wrong.
It seems below the level of the header tank but only just, surely it should be full of water?

This part of the engine is above the "cold" water level of the header tank and is normal to be partially empty when cold. You should be able to squeeze the hose and feel a little water in the hose.

The header tank should be approx 50% empty when cold to allow for expansion. Its virtually impossible to get rid of most of the air as there is no static head on the coolant pipes. To overcome this & to vent the system effectively, rig up a substitute (temp) header tank well above the car and connect it to the expansion hose, then vent the cars system from the elevated tank and bleed points throughout the system.

Its a very poor system but given the constraits the designer had, he did a good job.
