I'm bored seeing the guys making the show like they don't care about cars. They had 3 mega cars and it should be automotive porn, but its just a mild funny trip with some ironical jokes on cars........ Top gear used to be a show for car enthusiasts, maybe a funny one but now its not for car enthusiasts .
just had to say that this episode was not the christmas special.. the christmas special is comin on boxing day. they take a trip to Iraq and drive to bethlehem. but this episode is the start to the new season of a good looking top gear series.
This was actually supposed to be episode 7 of 7, last of the series for 2010, not sure why it wasn't released that way
isn't it ironic that Jeremy loved the 458 in a previous review but now feels its no match for the SLS just because a few burned down?
great episode. I like that they toured the East Coast of the US too, especially when they met the Amish.
The 458 looks fantastic in this episode! Simply gorgeous. However I feel that JC always has to dislike what the other guys like even if he, on the whole, agrees with them.. It's just to make it entertaining I guess but it's getting a bit old. This was not a very good episode either imo. The only exciting part was the SLS vs 458 race in the end. They had such amazing cars and they didn't do much with it.. A navigation race on the streets of New York?.. meh.. The GT3 RS-G SL-Vantage and FGT-Zonda-F430 episodes were a similar setup but miles better imo.
Best show? not even close, not even in the top 3 car shows for me. Bunch of monkeys, extremely lucky to be in this line of work, but monkeys and nothing more. It would be a FANTASTIC show, if somehow one could selective mute the illogical, 'must say something funny right now', "presenters" and simply let the car noises come through.
I love top gear for what it is. A spectacle, a TV SHOW. I love the imagery, i love the challenges, i love the stupidity of what they do just for the sake of it, i love how they poke fun at each other yet seem to be very close friends and the cars are amazing. Plus i love that they hate commies, hippies and most governments.
Why? Same horsepower, same weight, dual clutch transmission. Evenly matched cars, evenly matched race.
Fifth Gear spent an entire season trying to replicate Top Gear before realizing they just couldn't do it so they went back to doing more traditional road tests. However, in the head to head challenges between Tiff Needell and Jason Plato, what does hand brake turns between cardboard boxes and who can hold the longest power slide really tell you about the cars?. (Basically it's fifth Gear still trying to be Top Gear). At the end of the day both shows fill a certain niche and in a way, they both seem to compliment each by doing things the way they do (which they seem to have realized and accepted). Also, don't forget that Fifth Gear was taken off the air for a couple of years due to a lack of interest on the part of the watching public whereas Top Gear disappeared as JC, the Hamster and Captain Slow were concerned the public were tired of it. After a lot of requests for a new series from the public, they realized their mistake and came back. (Don't believe Me?, just look at how popular the re-runs of Top Gear are on BBC3 and Dave TV and compare it to re-runs of Fifth Gear. Also, You don't hear of the rest of the world wanting to buy the fifth gear series). Fifth Gear basically came back because it was cashing in on the interest of Top Gear again!. Like I say though, there's room for both (but if I had to choose, it's Top Gear for Me every time!).
Top Gear? A TV show not to be taken seriously, nothing more. The difference remains: Jason can drive, Clarkson can't. Period. The latter is a clown with a goofy face and big nose, the former, a professional driver recently rated as # 32 in the world by Auto Sport...
Exactly!, it's purely for entertainment. Where too many people go wrong is that they take it far too seriously. And Clarkson can entertain for an hour without the aid of a car, Jason can't!. As for which one has the big nose, I think you need to re-check some pictures of Mr Plato!. Now had you said: " The latter is a clown with a goofy face and big fat belly!" then you'd get no argument whatsoever (even from Clarkson himself!). The trouble is your comparing apples and pears. One's a professional racing driver trying to entertain people, the others a TV presenter who, despite what you might think, can drive cars pretty well and can be incredibly entertaining. Like I say, take the car away from Plato and see how long he lasts at entertaining you on TV. My money is on: Not very long. Oh!, BTW, which programme has an Emmy to boast about?, was it Fifth Gear?, I don't think so!.
