Interesting.... a new world record to boot! I can only imagine how amazing that would have sounded. Thanks for the link.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd1CiTy_ikM&search=safari%20rally You would think that by now they would have learnt how to put their power down!
FYI The driver was not the "Stig", but it was Oliver Panis. And how awesome was the brief flash of blue flame out of the exhaust when he takes off.. And could you imagine how ungodly loud it would be in that hall??
Yes, definitely wasn't the stig. There have been many Stigs. The 2004 Renault F1 car wasn't driven by Stig either... You can download the entire show via Bit Torrent if you want. I did that the morning after it came out!
can someone plz upload a proper link? i watched it, but it gets cut after the stig tests the chevy car....
I was in the top gear studio last week when they recorded that show. A friend sorted out the trip for me as a surprise when I was in the UK on business. They recorded the studio part on the Wednesday and the show aired last Sunday. I'm not on that intro shot, but I did make the foreground at a couple of points in the show. It was a great experience, they make it really fun for the audience. We got to see all the link sequences, plus a LOT of stuff that really stood no chance of making "on air" including some pope jokes and calling Tony Blair a "C". Very funny. This episode include a classic section where they go on a caravan "holiday". Fortunately I can have my brother DVR and DVD copy them for me, but I do think it is sadly missing in the US. You can apply on line for tickets (free in a lottery) via the topgear website, so if you are visting and it aligns with a show, you should try to go.
Ok i'm a bit confused. I've learned from drag racing that you will pretty much run the same MPH at the trap wheather or not you hooked up or spun the tires all the way down the quarter mile. If this is correct than the F1 car should have been waaaaaaaaaay faster than what it was, traction or no.
Um..what? The smooth concrete has a lot less friction than the pavement on an F1 track. Exaggerate it to ice. An F1 car won't reach top speed in the same distance if it's trying to go on ice vs. on pavement.
"Built Toyota Tough!" That was crazy. Why doesn't Toyota put all this time and money spent in motorsport to use? - Chris
Maybe they are too big for their own good...communication gets lost in the works. As an aside, I remember as a kid watching the Toyotas doing their thing in the Safari....it was ridiculous! Far more than I can say for F1.
God I wish I could have been in that building just to hear the noise it produces...and my little bro thought F1 cars were deafening down the main straight at Indy. Mark
You'll definitely have a higher trap speed and a lower ETA not spinning the tires as static friction is higher than that of kinetic friction. The only way this wouldn't be true is in a case where the engine isn't powerful enough, and they use the (slightly) spinning tires as a sort of slipper clutch. Most street cars launch like this, but once going spinning the tires is slower. edit; just watched the video. He spins the tires off the line b/c he needs some slippage to keep the engine in its powerband while launching, and with a 4-4.5" clutch it's better to do it at the tires. Some, like Renault, seemed to have perfected using such a small clutch to slip at the launch, but it's touchy business.
Watch it more carefully. You can see him getting suited up in the background, in the Stig suit, with the stig helmet under his arm..
oliver panis isn't that heavy though, i just went to his site and he looks younger and quite a bit thinner then the man the stig outfit. it's obvious he isn't one of the regular stigs, and he's also too heavy/old to be ricardo zonta.
Remember the original BBC "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"? We need to put "market analysts" and telephone sanitizers on the "B Ark". I bought my Celica GT-Four (AllTrac) after watching the '88 WRC season. Now I have an EVO. (Not to mention the Alfa and Ferrari.) "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday". Way too simple for a marketing consultant's fee. Just remember: "analyst" begins with "anal". And look at the prunemobiles being flogged to the public. Coincidence?
