The Iranians and their F-14s are one of the reasons most TF-30 engined aircraft were quickly turned into beercans once retired.

That's a really great article. There are some interesting internet sites about the Iranian Tomcats, but that pulls the whole story together in a good way.

My favorite plane of all time. I was working at Butler Aviation - DCA 90-91, Grumman would always be super nice to us, bring a fat turkey for every single lineman and dispatcher if they came in around Thanksgiving or Christmas. Their pilots were telling me then what an amazing aircraft the F-14D was going to be, vectored thrust and such. Unfortunately wasn't meant to be. Navy turned down the F-17 Tigershark but when it was upgraded, twice the price and rebranded the F/A-18 it hit the spot and retired the F-14 for the US Navy. I'm surprised the Iranian F14's are still airworthy, didn't know that.

When the YF-16 beat the YF-17 in USAF's Lightweight Fighter competition, Northrop gave up the design to McDonnell-Douglas for a part of the manufacturing rights. The Navy wanted a twin engine fighter and was not going to allow hydrazine on a carrier, so the F-16 was unsuitable. Both were converted from LWF air-to-air machines into much heavier F-4 replacements aimed at air-to-mud as much as air-to-air.
