My 355 came with no heat shield on the driver's side and a reconstructed heat shield on the passenger side. Both sides were rebuilt. I am removing the passenger side now to fix a leak I found with a smoke test. I am thinking about making a heat shield that will only go on the top on the passenger side. This will protect the oil tank and the other things above on the engine. My theory is that heat will be directed under the bottom of the car where it won't do any damage.

    Any thoughts on this?

The alternator and flexible oil lines that run under the header are the most vulnerable things there. The oil tank is just a metal box.

OK so you currently have a full shield (top/bottom) on the passenger side and no shield on the driver side and no ceramic coating on the headers.
If you only have a half (top) shield on the passenger side, as noted above, you will not only expose the alternator & oil lines but also the motor mounts and the lower portion of the oil tank. Plus with no shield on the drivers side you are exposing the a/c compressor, lines and motor mounts as well. You need lower shields on both sides. Have a look at the Fabspeed site and their shields....they are easy to fabricate. As well you could fabricate metal shields over the motor mounts.

another option is to use only the fabspeed shields but to ceramic coat the headers with the heaviest ceramic coating you can get for added protection. most ceramic coat their unshielded headers.

Thank you very much. After I got the passenger header off I see what you mean about the alternator and engine mount. My mounts are new thankfully and I'd better protect them. I am replacing my CV boots at the same time.

Are you referring to the fabspeed header blankets?

the fabspeed header blankets are certainly an excellent option but very expensive.

what I was suggesting was the 2 square stainless metal heat shields in the pics with the fabspeed 355 headers....they go in front of the a/c compressor and the alternator.
they are easily made from autobody heavy grade sheet metal and painted with ceramic paint for rust protection.

with regard to the motor mounts....cut 2 squares of sheet metal...say 6 inches x 4 inches....drill a hole roughly in the middle ...remove the nut holding the motor mounts and place over the motor mounts..reinstall the nut . once installed you can bend down the heat shield around the motor mount to protect it from header radiant heat. you may have to take it off a few times to hit it with a hammer to get the right shape. I also painted it with ceramic paint to protect it from corrosion.
