So tell us more how that one ended.

I've tried it once on a very wide, empty and flat autobahn. The GPS unit (which logs the max speed attained) showed a max speed of exactly 263 km/h i.e. 163 mph. The speedo was at well over 270.

The noise - in particular the wind noise from the targa seals copping out and not so much the engine noise does not make it a pleasant experience, however tracking and aerodynamics seemed fine. Did that the one time for research purposes but generally never take it over 220.

    Hi Przemek
I find anything above 240 a bit crazy. Main problem is the front starts to go a bit light. Wind noise isn't really a problem but then I have a GTB rather than your GTS. Also, anything above 240 the speed increase is pretty sluggish. Perfect autobahn cruising speed (when conditions allow) I find is 200-240kmh.

I drove mine to 150mph after 3 vodka drinks and one in the left hand, no big deal, I find 328s very calm at high speeds, and at least better at in a straight line at 140mph over a 360 Modena.

My father was in the passenger seat and later I found out he was talking to my brother and some of my friends asking them if they thought I was doing ok or if I had any suicidal tendencies, lol.

Si - agree with you all the way and yes the front does get light over 240.

I was however quite interested in what the Mannheim polizisten thought of your antics ;)

Back about 20 years ago when we pretended to not know any better....drove un-belted, and seemingly uncaring about alcohol related accidents and death rates...I guess this might have been amusing.

Not now. This part of the thread should be edited out entirely. Not funny at all, and a really bad example for anyone reading.

I guess you haven't known anyone who ended up on the wrong end of a drunken joyride like this (as unitentional as the outcome may have been), but some of us unfortunately do.

    FWIW:

IF you plan on doing any spirited driving where tires and brakes may be an issue more than straight line speed, remember: these are older vehicles. I know I may be questioned here, but a 20+ year old vehicle may have stress fractures etc. that you take a gamble on when going at or near its pristine limits. I mean, I wouldn't take SCUBA down if I thought it were near its limits nor fly without its proper annual.

Take care out there, in that no one is around you or with you to have survivors mourn. 2 cents. NOW< I/we DO about 130 in the 456 and 120 in the Mondial T, top down: we have a death wish :)

Exactly, these speedos are not reliable: only good thing about them is you are doing 10 MPH standing still ;)

Another consideration is whether or not the car has the roof spoiler. The spoiler must surely knock a couple of miles per hour off top speed, if not more.

With Fresh tires, and a decent inspection of the car, say right after a major service, it ought to be reasonably safe. I've only had the Mondial up to about 120, and it felt pretty stable. It has new rubber, and all of it seems more than ok, with 31k on it. The 430 is quite a bit faster, but I've only had it up to about the same speed. The 360 I had, saw 165 more than once, and it felt very, very stable there.
