As all of you should know, Wednesday marks the 70th anniversary of the "unprovoked and dastardly attack" on Pearl Harbor that propelled us into World War II and changed America forever.

Unfortunately, with the passage of time, I fear that the significance of the attack and our response to it is disappearing into the recesses of our minds and being minimized in the education of our schoolchildren. I happened to spend the evening of November 22nd in the Washington, DC area and was appalled that, especially there, there was no mention whatsoever on any news outlet of the anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

We cannot let the Pearl Harbor attack disappear into history. I strongly urge each and every one of you to get a copy of the DVD of the 1970 movie "Tora! Tora! Tora!" - a fine recreation of the attack and the events leading up to it, and vastly superior to the more recent trash called "Pearl Harbor" - and sit down and watch it, in its entirety, with your whole family. Even if the press and the education system lets us down, we can do our own educating. After the movie, discuss what you've seen with your children.

Even after 70 years, we must still "Remember Pearl Harbor!"

That is because Micheal Bay set out to tell an action/love story set against the backdrop of the day of infamy and D.F. Zanuck, Richard Fleischer and Kinji Fukasaku set out to actually tell the story of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

I had a chance a few years back to visit the Tokyo war museum near the big Shinto shrine and it was an eye-openingly different perspective. The German museums I have seen are openly apologetic for their government's role in the war (most individual servicemen deserve respect I think), but the Japanese opnely refer to the war as one of Western agression and the Pearl Harbor attack as an unavoidable result of western embargos and resulting shortages in natural resources such as steel and oil.

The movie as a whole is fairly bad, but watching the attack sequence in "Pearl Harbor" on Blu-Ray with surround sound is just incredible.

Time to read The Greatest Generation again.
Today's Americans wouldn't make such sacrifices. Sad, sad.

Interesting that Wikipedia refers to "Tora! Tora! Tora!" as "Historical fiction" but refers to "Pearl Harbor" as just plain "Fiction"!

Not to take things too far into a P&R direction, but if you read contemporary opinion from the 1930s, they said the same thing-- only they were talking about WWI. Furthermore, what Americans have accomplished in Iraq and Afghanistan is easily on a level with earlier generations.

    Heading there again on Saturday.

Some of the leading backers of the place are part of Japan's right wing. The country is not as homogenous as the outside world thinks it is.

In my opinion, Pearl Harbor, was a tactical victory and a strategic defeat for Japan. At the same time, the attack, was a tactical defeat and a strategic victory, for the United States.

What ruined that sequence for me was their use of some very modern-looking mothballed frigates for some of the pyrotechnics.

Suggestion: a minute of silence at 12:55 PM Eastern time (9:55 AM Pacific time), the moment that the attack began.....

I love both of those movies. Was shocked in talking to a friend that he didn't know either date.

The passage of time is relentless and the associated distancing of people today from those events is undeniable

I found out my president's father and my father in law served together at Pearl in a PBY unit. The unit was deployed on Dec 6th. His father was with a buncjh of guys pushing a plane into a hangar. A bomb hit twenty feet away and failed to explode. The next day he was on the roof fixing the hole. That would be about the only hangar in the after pictures. He found the arming spinner stuck in the roof. My pres has a reproduction of it.

My father in law suffered from arthritis in the anckle and it swelled terribly. He wanted to be deployed with his unit very badly but the doc wouldn't let him go. Those men may have been in the adjascent hangar. They were all killed. My father in law never had arthritis again.

Ive been there also, and Hiroshima and Nagasaki...you are correct...I was at the new remodeled Pearl Harbor museum last year, for those that havent been there in a while it is completely different, very nice. The Japanese tourists out numbered Americans there but there were a still a few old timers there to share stories with!
