As a Calgarian, there are a few other Canadian cities that I can think of, which I would say I dislike a lot more than the sprawling muggy metropolis that is TO. It isn't a bad place per say......it's big, but that's it.

Regina kinda tops the list for me........followed by Winnipeg.

I would think Regina is, since it does have the highest murder rate per capita.

For the record, I LOVE T.O....I just don't know if I could ever live there, it is TOO big.

    LMAO!

I suppose I "could" live in T.O. then if a cottage in Muskoka is part of the deal :D

i thought the article was odd myself - persoanlly i love all of Canada, even Quebec when im there when i try to butcher my french explanations - they appreicate the bad effort - LOL

No reason to hate Toronto - aside from it turning more like an American city with Starbucks, subways, and condo's on every corner like New york and LA - but if you dont like it, thats fine, no reason to HATE it -

But i do noitce the last 5 yrs, going to Ottawa and other places, when you come back to toronto, it does seem the landscape changes more often, compared to other provinces.

Toronto is the most multicultural city in the world. Where else do you have such diverse neighborhoods? Not even New York is as diverse. Sure it's a big sprawling city but you can find anything you want. I love living in Toronto...sorry, I don't stay home and watch Little Mosque on the Prairie or the Littlest Hobo like the rest of Canada...although sometimes I'll watch Beach Combers... :D

Hold on now lol as a local Regina boy been here since 75 the city is actually very nice. Small town feel with big city flavour, plus one of the biggest city parks in Canada.

As far as the statistics, we have a small population just over 200K so crimes or murders per capita is ridiculous as most statistics are. On top of it all I have yet to have seen anything as almost 90% of the crimes are caused by aboriginal gangs. We hardly ever see anything or get affected.

In fact the gangs in Calgary are 10X worse, so are the crimes. As a nightclub owner I hear the horror stories the clubs in Calgary go through.

Comparing any city to Ottawa, Victoria or Vancouver is going to be difficult as they are such nice places. I have lived in three of the five largest cities in North America and can say that Toronto is one of my favorites. I was amazed with one of the individuals that was interviewed said that Toronto isnt very friendly. From my perspective, its one of the friendliest cities that I have ever lived in.

Any Canadian city has its nice and not-so-nice sides. To use the word "hate" for any city is pretty narrow-minded and childish, in my opinion. It's probably some kind of envy that compells people to say they "hate" a city.

Ultimately, what's important is that you like your own "space" and "environment", regardless of where that may be.

I've lived in many different places (in Asia, Europe and N/America) and liked all of them.

If there's any dislike of Toronto in the rest of the country, it's because of the ego. As a gross generalization, Toronto sees itself like, and desperately wants to be seen like, New York, the center of the Universe. Examples? The CFL isn't good enough for TO, they want the NFL. The tag line on the Globe and Mail - "Canada's National Newspaper", yet it's filled with local Toronto sports, culture, etc. It's a Toronto newspaper through and through, yet the rest of Canadians are supposed to think that if it matters to TO then it must matter to us.

One of the funniest things to Westerners is the enduring perception in TO that they're more multicultural than most other cities, and along with that the overriding notion in TO that Calgary is some hick redneck cowtown... Yet in municipal mayoral elections last year, it was Calgary that elected the cool, savvy, articulate, Muslim, Etheopian heritage mayor (Naheed Nenshi), and Toronto that elected the fat, white, redneck, semi-literate Rob Ford! :p

As far as people themselves and the city itself, though, I love TO and the people, as do most everyone I know.

LOL excellent observation........even today my dealings with TO on a business level, brings these observations forward
there is somehow (due to physical size i suppose) that business men from TO are 'better' somehow, and makes us laugh.......schooled a couple in our dealings this past couple of weeks ha

I live in Toronto (downtown), and have for 10+ years, and I can say I understand why it is a disliked city. From someone living in another city the "national" news coverage that dedicates large amounts of time on Toronto (like people in Halifax care?) or the "Canadian" sports stations that spend half their time on the Leafs, these types of things wear on the normal person.

People hate having Toronto shoved down their throats.

Some good points for sure but it can be on the contrary too. I personally would love to visit western Canada and admit there is alot to be offered. Many of my colleagues think the same. Then I hear people here in Toronto say that BC'ers have their noses up their arses too. You can't win.

As for the media, two of you say that the papers say are always pro Toronto?! Well then maybe you guys should get your own national paper! Whats the matter? You aint good enough? :D (I kid I kid)

On that note aint the Globe and Mail owned by Winnipeggers? ;)

I love Toronto, I live in Winnipeg. I love CANADA! (I'm not a hater of anyting) I visit Toronto, put up with traffic, but everyone I meet there, all nationalities, are so nice, as are those in Winnipeg. Learn to adjust your tolerances and you'll have a happier life, wherever you are! Smiles everyone!

    Thats a very smart comment!

I was born, and currently live in Toronto. (Spent many years in between in the suburbs). Being such a multicultrural city (GTA also) has its ups and downs. You absolutely need to adjust your tolerances and patience when dealing with different types of people, but in the end; we all need to respect and help eachother.

I have also travelled to many different cities in USA, Canada and Europe, and what I can honestly say is that we have it VERY GOOD here in T.O, sometimes too good that we overlook the big picture, and complain about every little crappy detail. (Which Torontonians are famous for). We have jobs, health, safety, economy, nature, schools, culture etc.....many other cities have only a fraction of those.

True Story: My wife and I came back from a Euro vacation last month, we randomly met a guy from Paris, who was trying to get into Canada (Toronto)...we also met another couple from Brazil (both were doctors) and were trying desperately to get into Canada (Toronto)...and we met another couple from Moscow who again, were trying to emigrate to Canada (again into Toronto). They all were so enthusiastic about meeting us, and discussing "Canadian Life", we ended up speaking for a few hours about Canada, and the differences between their current country. And these were all educated people from important cities....We couldn't believe the amount of foregieners who are trying to become Canadian!

My cousins in Italy, with all their PHD's and studies, are dying to get into Canada, more so than the U.S.

As a proud Montrealer and having dated a Woodbridge chick for a while, I'm quite familiar with the city and although Montrealer love to hate on Toronto I have to admit that it's by far the superior city today.

Not only is it progressive, clean and growing but it has none of the French political B.S. Quebec has, and for that immigrants have more upward mobility.

Being anglo-quebecer and invisible minority in Quebec is not the best scenario possible. I find the Italian community in Toronto is leaps and bounds ahead of ours. Also more assimilated one could argue, but definitely more integrated.

Cool, I found the Italian community in Montreal to be pretty big and great too. But nice to hear ours is comparable (or better as you say). I am Portuguese but have lived all my life in proximity to both the big Italian communities here: Corsa Italia (on St.Clair) and Little Italy (College St.) It's awesome.

We have a very big community here and lot`s of Portuguese working with us or around us. The GTA Italians outnumber us and are more assimilated than Montreal Italians.
