Back in 1981 I decided to learn to fly, weighing the options of renting or owning, so I bought a 1977 cherokee for 10 grand. I had an old time pilot friend who taught me pretty much everything and then some, took my written, got a 98, did 4 hours of dual with an instructor and went for my checkride. Things were a lot different back then, quite a bit more relaxed. I flew the crap out of that little Piper and sold it for $33500. I now own a Mooney and an Aeronca on floats, love the Mooney for CC and can't wait for the snow to put the skis on the Aeronca. So, all in all, my training was about as much as yours with the exception I got a plane out of the deal. A friend also did the same just recently, although he logged about 100 hrs he still saved at least $100 an hr for rental fees.
