Guys, I was so tired of looking at the foam heating crap on my 348 I had to do something with it. This is my first Ferrari and I only had it for 5 months and that heat foam drove me crazy. It was sagging and had a small hole torn in it. People always want to see the motor in the car, and how bad does that stuff make the motor look. Not mine anymore! My best friend owns the biggest car audio & accessory store in Pittsburgh. He is mechanical engineer, master technician and as you can see a custom fabricator. We also put Hyper-Flow race pipes and a Tubi on. There is no comparison in the world on how good my car sounds now. Sorry my motor is a little dirty, I have not detailed the car yet. It came off the truck and I have been driving it. Thanks again enjoy.

I like it. But what really matters is that you like it. I would imagine that it looks totally different in person then it does in picture format.

I think you lose $5k in resale on a Ferrari if you sneeze while driving it too....:)

That looks really sharp...how could someone not like it? The stock foam looks like garbage.

Many of us have replaced the foam with a higher quality JC Whitney product that is reflective and well insulating. The insulation does serve a purpose; Ferrari didn't put it there just to vex us owners.

Looks good but you might want to wash that engine bay and engine so it would look even better!

Looks wise it is certainly better than dangly foam by a long shot. But the black foam is an insulating material that soaks up heat. I would think that this might be an ok alternative for protecting the paint on your engine cover (maybe) but might also raise the temps in the engine bay and help cook your wires and rubber bits faster, not unlike tinfoil around a baked potato.

Nice choice of car though - extremely well chosen in fact.

    Welcome to F-chat!!

    Cheers

    Folks ....

I'll probably go out of business if I continue to recommend *other* companies... but I'm using the heat shield listed here for my 348:

    http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10101/s-10101/p-100000142779/mediaCode-ZX/appId-100000142779/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000142779

    and the glue....

    http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10101/s-10101/p-100000221105/mediaCode-ZX/appId-5000002002963/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:1000002211055000002002963

Very easy to fit, glue works great, and looks quite respectable.

I would have replaced the original heat shield. Ferrari put it there for a reason......IMO.

Here is some ancient history. As an update, I've had my homemade insulation material on the car for more than two years now, and it still looks like the day I installed it. The original factory foam insulation was junk, junk, junk!

    http://70.85.40.84/~ferrari/discus/messages/256120/202509.html

Daniel, I'd like to see a picture of the JC Whitney material you used on your 348. (I saw the link you posted, I'd like to see a picture of it on your car - it looks like good stuff!)

    Jeff -

Mine looks almost identical to the final photo in your old thread. Except... I didn't cut it into six pieces... I made two long strips and threaded it under the braces. That way, even if the glue were to come loose (but it hasn't!), the insulation wouldn't fall into the engine itself. I performed my installation with the hood still attached to the car, although a local 348 friend (dcdc) removed his hood during installation.

I think the trick to the JC Whitney approach was their special hi-temp glue. The original Ferrari insulation was total and utter crap.

FYI for DIY'ers: Since I did the installation "in situ", I draped a big tarp over the engine while I fitted the insulation. I didn't want any errant bits of glue dropping on the engine and causing problems.

I'd like to know if there are any 348's with the 360 type glass engine cover? I think it would be cool. Does anyone make one? I've seen them for TR's before.

Guys, this was engineered; it was not just cut out of template and stuck on. There is a 1/8th inch gap all around the polished stainless to prevent rubbing of the piece and also to help it breathe. Behind the piece is 1/8th inch thick aluminum backing plate that provides a better heat shield than the foam. The aluminum dissipates heat allot better than the foam ever did. The foam would just get hot, hold the heat, make the glue real weak and then start to sag and fall on the engine. It has been on for about two weeks and no problems at all. Paint is PERFECT!
For the critics who I love. Resale value is only worried about people who cannot AFFORD the car they drive. If you are looking for an investment buy stocks or mutual funds. If you are going to invest in a Ferrari you buy a 250 GT Spyder California! That’s when you can say you accumulate cars, like a connoisseur. I love Gone in 60 Seconds. Go to the Sema car show one time in you life. Ever Rapper and Pro Athlete’s car is there. They take there BRAND NEW Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Porsche, Lotus, what ever and have them gutted, repainted, totally customized with TV’s, big stereos, and huge wheels. You think they care about resale value! What a joke! They can afford there cars. Wait till you see the custom heat shield that I make for my exhaust. You pay all the money for a Tubi exhaust on a 348 and you cannot even see it. Time to reengineer that a little also.

I don't care if you loose your shirt on the car if you ever try to sell it. It's just one more thing that will have to be fixed during a restoration down the road.

You're obviously new to the Ferrari world. The "keep it stock" camp has many more members than the "modified" camp.

I don't think it will affect resale that much. It's such a neat addition that the fac thtat it's not stock will balance out with the originality... possibly...

GQ. Welcome, and very cool that you are subscribed. I like the mods. Don't take some of the knocks to seriously--there is a strong "anti-mod" contingent on Fchat. Certainly, with rare cars, this makes sense--newer cars are less collectable (maybe not in 50 years, but in the near future) so you should mod it how you want it. Be sensitive to the fact that there is a subset of members who don't see their Ferrari as an investment, but they can't treat it as a disposable object either (I'm one of those). One of the things that makes Ferrari ownership possible for me is low and predictable depreciation (relative, of course).

    Keep the photos coming.

Yes new to the Ferrari world. Not a member of anyone’s camp. Minor and tasteful modification to any car will not hurt the resale, unless you are talking about a true rare car. Yes if you slap a ground effect kit on a Ferrari or put a huge wing off the back of it, paint it a totally different color yes you will hurt resale value, because you will limit the number of people that will want the car. The car becomes too personalized to ones individual taste. Minor and tasteful things will never hurt. That means I should take off the drilled pedal set also, the chrome slick gated shifter, and the chrome shift ball. How can companies like DexM exotic performance survive! While I’m at it I’ll pitch the Tubi and put the stock exhaust back on with the cats, the car sounds better stock!!! Last thing, I’m not one of those guys who tells people I drive a Ferrari. Remember guys you cannot drive your car into the night club. So it doesn’t matter what type of car you drive. Point being I’m just a used car salesman. I buy, wholesale, and retail over 7,000 cars a year. Loose my shirt??? Not for what I paid for the car. I’ll turn the car in two years and make $8,000.00. Thanks for all the concern.

That's a beautiful modification & customization....it's done tastefully with style and looks very VERY elegant: huge points for creativity, initiative and not being a drone for fear of staying between the lines!!!

It's not like it can't be returned to it's former ugly state; no harm, no foul. He didn't cut into the body or do something absurd like turning it into a mud-bogger...it's just a nice touch and suits the car very well.

In the wise & soothing words of Paris Hilton "It's HOT.....uh, can I get paid now?" ;)

It's a nice mod. But I have been to SEMA and I wasn't impressed by the gaudy, flashy rapper cars. Why would you put a TV in a sports car? Or bling bling wheels that block cooling air flow to the brakes? Or hideous ostrich leather seats.

To each his own, but if you are going to cite examples, you may want to make sure they are impressive ones.
