I'd like to update this thread. I realize that this is the Internet (you know that place where nobody knows your name and everybody is an expert), but I'd really like to get some feedback from people who have owned or driven either car. (In other words, please save your SUV or Porsche copped out rants for another thread.)

My real question is whether the Cayenne is worth the premium over the Touareg.

I wouldn't suggest either. They both have their problems.

Buy an American SUV, ie Escalae, Denali, they are the toughest and most reliable on the road, JD Power awarded the Yukon/Escalade #5 on "best SUV" list, Cayenne or Touareg was not on the list. They will probably never see a mechanics floor, as like VW and Porsche which are crap these days.

I have been in and driven both a Cayenne and Touareg, resale will be higher and its much faster and exclusive than the VW.

FWIW, couple of buddies of mine own junk yards, take all makes of cars apart etc. and they swear by Tahoes/Yukons when it comes to trucks....One was a guy who told me that Mercedes was turning to **** quite some years back and his prophecy appears to have come true....

If you are talking in terms of pure driving.

Cayenne > Touareg (take the V8 of course).

    Reliability

    Touareg > Cayenne.

Early Cayennes had many many electrical problems.

I'll post something better later, i'm pretty tired.

I don't think Europeans can compare their SUV' s or trucks to us North Americans, #1 for trucks of all sizes!

VW just bought back my wife's 2005 Touareg V8 with 15,000 miles the drivers seat would try to smash you into the steering wheel while driving and could not repaired despite repeated attempts. No threats or lemon law needed they offered another truck (2006) we declined & they wrote a check (less miles). Mileage was terrible and service was worse...alignment and electrical issues were constant. Also navigation system.

On the other hand my ML500 (2002) gets almost double the mileage and has never needed service other than routine. It now has 80,000 miles on it (and I tow with it constantly). We took the money from VW and purchased a new 2007 ML350 for the wife and so far (knock on wood) cannot be happier.

    Good luck to you.

I agree with that, but this is a thread about Cayenne versus Touareg!
Some Europeans would say that your normal cars drive like trucks too, but I don't agree!!

A few remarks about those. They share the same body, right? But have different engines, right? VW Touaregs are cheaper than Porsche, right?

How is it then that I see 10 Cayennes for 1 Touareg? I would have expected the other way round.

The V10 is available again this year. They may be sold out already.

I liek the way the Toureg looks a lot better, and I know a person who has a 05 V8 that doesnt have very many problems at all. The Cayenne is nice if you can get the turbo, but otherwise, I don't care for it as much.

Good point. I guess the Touareg is SO unpopular that there are naturally more Cayennes on the road.??

Agreed, the Touraeg is nicer looking. My brother is a sales manager at a VW dealership and sometimes gets one for his demo. The interior is spectacular. Mileage probably blows, but his gas is paid for. I also agree the Cayenne isn't terribly attractive.

To the original poster: I wouldn't buy either, but the VW seems to make more sense unless you plan to track your SUV.

The Cayenne (most aren't Turbos) is a cheap way to get a Porsche badge and a family car at the same time. Don't underestimate the draw of the marque.

Having driven and sold both myself many times over, my take is as follows.......

On a new car basis, the premium for the Cayenne is too much to pay. Buy the VW.......

If it is a used one you are thinking about getting, buy the Porsche.

The Porsche drives much better, like a 5,000 pound 911.........the VW is very soft, floaty and leans a lot in corners.

Cayenne's are very good vehicles on the reliability side as well.......personally I like the V6.

Thanks for the feedback. It certainly gives food for thought.

If you don't mind, I'd appreciate your comments on a new different thread - Options for an Urban Street Fighter.
