Touring not Ghia. Also the green car you posted is most definitely not for sale, I saw it in September 2018 in one of the finest Maserati collections in the world, in Connecticut. The one Gooding is auctioning is a different car.
Marc, Correct that is the Basil Reed car #004, if the current owner were inclined to sell. It would never make it to auction, it would change hands without anyone knowing about it but a small group of confidants

Of course Touring !!! I was comparing the Touring and Ghia 5000 models I was while posting….and had a bit of “old people confusion”. Not my first error or my last! Have any F-chat members seen 103.010 in person?
The car you show here is not the car that comes for sale. Its #103.004, fitted with the "true" gear-driven but slightly detunes 450S engine. Gooding has #103.010 for sale. Also Touring but fitted with a standard, chain-driven 5000GT-engine... Good car,no doubt, but unfortunately it has lost its original geardriven motor shortly after it was completed. It was once owned by a very good friend of mine in Italy who sold it many moons ago to John Bookout from Houston, TX. After parting from many other cars I assume this is -probably?- the last important Maserati they are selling.
Yes, I saw it in person in Turin 1998 and little later in Franco Tralli`s workshop (s. photo). I have many photos of it when it had been found by J.S. in the backyard of Maserati in very sad condition. Looking on the Gooding photos, I see the car too high sitting on its rear axle. What about the particular headlights? I understood this isn't the 1959 Turin Motor show car. Image Unavailable, Please Login
From what I can gather from Gooding and my own knowledge so far, is that the car body work was done to a very high standard but with an incomplete interior which is not in the car. I don't yet know how much of the complete interior is with the car as the project was to revert it back to the show car spec, which was lost after an " upgraded interior" was done when it was sold to the Prince Abdel Majid bin-Saud of Saudi Arabia in 1965. The car was shown at the 1960 Geneva Motor Show and then modified and on display later in the year, at the Turin Motor Show. It was retained by Maserati, and used to test an experimental 3.8-litre version of the V8 engine during 1961. It was then sold to a member of the Orsi family - I think it was Adolfo's relative who owned the metal foundry, I could be wrong. In 1965, it was returned to the factory where it was fully rebuilt with a chain driven five-liter engine and interior for the Prince. It returned from the Middle East during the 1980s. I have Bookout's Mexico 4.7 and he never cut corners, this must be the last of the lot of his cars. I also don't know what the current state of the mechanicals are at the moment, the engines are very challenging to rebuild with the fuel injection. Rod Drew in Costa Mesa is the only shop that I know of in the states that can set them up properly - he did an amazing job with the Allemano 5000 034 that I restored. Please forgive any errors or omission in my reporting! ..... Chris
The car was displayed in Geneve in 1960 with wire wheels and other specifications. The car has know the specifications from the Turin Motor Show in 1960. Best regards Nico Maier -Maserati 5000 GT Research-
I would assume that most of the pieces not fitted are in those many plastic bags that accompany the car. I would say quite a few man-hours work left to finish it.
The history of the car is documented by Adolfo Orsi and is with the car. The last owner was John F. Bookout. He bought it in 2000 before the car was auctioned by RM. I have written an article with the famous photographer Bruno von Rotz. https://www.zwischengas.com/de/FT/fahrzeugberichte/Maserati-5000-GT-Touring.html
Not a very good result. But the car was only part-restored. But the Touring coachwork should have fetched more, considering the results for Frua 5000GTs in the past.
The result was fine, and above the high estimate. The car was a project, and much of the restoration was from 2014. It wasn't finished for a reason.
I remember being at the auction in Georgia many years ago where that topless 5000 car sold. I recall it sold for around $65K. The owner had passed away and they were selling hundreds of cars at no reserve. Most cars had not been driven or maintained in years. I was tempted to bid on the 5000GT but got cold feet with having to deal with a not well maintained 5000GT engine. Ivan
The chopped 5000 GT was the french delivered Allemano 103*020. The car seems to live in Russia. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
#103.020 Was located in 1995 in Germany. 2008/9 sold to Russia. According to my knowledge the car is still in the Empire of Gospodin Putin...
I'm not sure what the car would look like with the top down. I suspect that it would fold into a recess and have a smooth look when folded. However, I'm quite surprised as to how clean the overall body lines are if you didn't have any top at all. It really looks like a body style with a hidden location for the convertible top when retracted would be very attractive. I always thought that the front and rear executions were well done. I wasn't a big fan of the greenhouse.
