Following on from my alternator belt replacement i have to change the A/C belt too. The belt ive been sent does'nt look anything like the old one which had a smooth narrow V, this ones got a broader V and is stepped, does anyone know if this is correct as this is the 2nd try as the 1st belt sent was way too long? Also any tips on getting it on gratefully accepted i've had a go and it's a SOB !

Give them the number off the old belt...no issues after that.

    Dear Ferraristi,

Instead of trying to match it up, just pay the F pimp this time around. I buy mine from the F dealer as I know they will have the ones that fit properly.

To put it in, again remove the black grill over the AC compressor/Alt.

At the bottom of the AC compressor, there is a pivot bolt just above the timing belt housing....loosen it, but you don't need to remove it.

Loosen the tension adjuster "clamp" bolt on top of the compressor.

Unwind the tension bolt and push the compressor downwards.....lots of room now.

Slip belt on and reverse your steps or.....click your heels and repeat " there's no place like home...there's no place like home " ( only works if you have red pumps on ) :D

** The pivot bolt is usually very tight and there's not allot of room to get very much leverage. I put the car on jack-stands and go from underneath. There is enough room to use a ratchet with a good long extender to break it loose....this will save your knuckles and your sanity...ask me how I know. :)

The AC belt isn't too bad... The alternator belt is a b*tch.

Sounds promising. Yikes... I hope my belts last till my major. Question: Is it normal that I get a squeal from the belts on cold start up. I am referring to the alt and a/c belt. After first start no squeel at all. Even if the car sits for a few hours.. Just was wondering only on cold start / overnight.

If it squeals, you will soon lose a belt on the road... Been there, done that...

I always wondered if sandblasting the pulleys during a major might provide for added friction so that these belts don't need to be aggressively tightened...

Noooooo......I told you not to ask!! :D

Seriously though, when I was changing my belts for the first time, I just could not break loose the pivot bolts on the Alt. or AC. I tried and tried with every wrench and scraped my knuckles on the Alt fan and so on and so on. I said " hell with this" and jacked up the car, went from underneath, put a socket on the bolt with a wratchet handle and a very long extender. With the force I could exert with the extender, I broke loose the pivot bolt with literly a couple of fingers pulling. ....ahhhh.....physics at it's best !

    Chairman,

This is not normal....that's why you need that update kit....no squeeling at all from mine.

Your belt is glazed and is slipping and will snap soon. Don't worry, this is really an easy DIY job. Do as I described and lay on top of the engine with your head forward of the engine cover/rear brake light. You can easily put the belts on once the bolts are loose.

Bringing this back, seeing as it's A/C season. 1990 TR. I need to install a belt on the compressor. Sounds like loosening the pivot bolt(s) is best done from below, I put her up on the lift Saturday night and looked (prior to reading this thread today). It would appear that removing the oil filter would give lots more access to reach up to the pertinent area, or was I over-thinking this?
Anyone have the part number for the belt, or who is a suggested dealer to order it from?
    TIA :)

Can't help with access question but I would hope you could loosen without removing the filter--not that that's a big deal. The F PN is 122973. Cost is ~$40.00 at Ricambi (Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini Parts Diagrams: Model = Testarossa (1990)). Can probably be found cheaper but they have good stock and service (and are a sponsor here).

The spare I have in my jack bag (don't know if it is original) is a Gates belt, their PN 8904-0800. No guarantees on this though, I have never used/fitted it to my compressor.
