1987 TR US. model: This is maybe a repost of removal before! My leather on top of the dash and speedo pod needed some redoing because of shrinkage. Lower the steering wheel all the way down, remove 8mm nut holding the small trim piece under the pod. 1013. Remove trim and two 10 mm nuts holding speedo pod, pic 1049. push up on pod to un hook at top. Remove 2 phillips screws for glove box trim, this will expose two 10 mm bolts holding dash. 1037. Remove side panel screws in center console front. pic 1047. Now center console: remove allen screw for small console box. pic 1039. Remove allen holding shoulder belt return. Very carefully remove prism trim pieces (metal) lights for center switches. pic 1043, 1010. Remove 10 mm bolt holding center switch plate pic 1040. Very carefully pry up ( plastic) switch and heater control plate and undue vacuum hose connection (10mm nut) pic 1042. and wiring harness under passenger side foot wheel. Continue post on dash removal: photo1042 vacuum bolt removal. Also on the 8mm nut on speedo pod trim piece, I cut the washer in half so you don't have to completely remove the nut. Ok now remove knee pad guard on US. models. Remove carpeted lower speaker trim pieces, 4 hidden small phillips screws. There are eight verticle 13 mm nuts holding knee pad to dash. You remove speakers to gain acess to them. Now I believe you can remove 10 mm bolt holding top of console (fuel, clock oil temp gauge part). Undue wiring harness for fuel gauge etc. I labeled these. Lift console from rear and undue any thing holding it, forgot gearshift gate (2 screws). Fish the center heater control panel thru console if leaving connected. to be continued! ( last photo is one of 8 13 mm nuts holding knee guard. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Sorry about the rambling. I'm better with a wrench than keyboard! I believe now we can remove the rest of dash. I removed steering wheel with special spaner I machined up, and need puller to remove steering wheel. There is a 3rd screw that holds the cover under steering column, (wrinkle piece under steering wheel). Remove radio, Undue bolts and nuts 10 mm, holding dash to car. 2 bolts in glove box, 2 nuts at top of dash in front of driver, and 3 bolts I believe in front of steering column. There are two 10 mm bolts vertical at each far end of dash, where knee pad was, at extreme ends. Loosen clamps for side defroster hoses. Carefully wiggle dash out. Now you see three clips with Phillips head screws holding top dash panel in. Cracked plastic and old foam. I reused dash cover leather, was good shape. I used 1/8" ABS plastic, glued new foam and stapled (short staples 5/32") defroster vents to ABS. New Italian black leather was replaced on speedo pod and left of pod. (had a trimmer do this). Took me about 3 hours to remove dash, not as bad as I expected. Just take your time. When I had dash apart, I pulled two new 10 foot heater hoses back to the engine. (30 year old originals) Top photo is steering wheel spanner. You can see how bad plastic was on top dash cover. I have engine out. ( another post coming up).
when I once removed my dashboard I not removed the stearing wheel. I let down the complete sterringwheel mechanism
Here is photo of the 3rd screw holding the wrinkle cover under the steering column, Has a ground wire also. Other photo is of two 10 mm nuts and three 10 mm bolts holding dash to car. If you remove the steering wheel you can clean the switch contacts for the fog light flash stalk. Mine was oxidized. When the heater and A/C panel is out, you can clean those switch contacts also. Hi David. This is one of my winter jobs along with whipping the heater matrix / fans out so thank you very much for posting up.
Thanks for the pics. My upper dash is light tan color as opposed to dark brown. Now I know exactly where the tab is to remove it and recover it to get rid of the reflection. Is that the only screw holding the dash top on (the half moon with the defroster vents)?
There are 3 tabs holding the dash top on. Forum number three, the 4th photo is the middle tab. Kind of simple when you get things apart. You can see this is a hand made car and plenty of time was spent trimming the interior. I also replaced the old foam around the A/C center vent. I would like to know how to add arrows and circles to my photos? I could explain better.
