I have some minor seepage on the drivers side driveshaft flange. Anyone have experience as to labor cost etc.? Thanks, Christian
By flange leak, do you mean: 1) The rubber boot, covering the CV joint? 2) OR; The rubber seal holding the flange housing......that, to which the axle shaft bolts onto? This will leak along the side of the transmission cover, below the level of the axle shaft.
The leak is coming from the inner most area of the drive shaft where it goes into the side of the transmission. So I guess the second description is the that is accurate. Fairly common problem?
I believe the problem is common enough............I replaced the seal, on my TR, about 2 years ago. The inner drive shaft has to be removed, and moved over, out of the way. There is a 17-19mm bolt, with a large washer, that has to be removed. The flange is then pryed out.......exposing the seal. The problem is that it is a very recessed area, once the flange comes off........and the shaft, from the trans sticks out. It is hard to get the old seal off and the new seal on.........I had to machine a seal installer. It can be done. When I did mine, I removed the whole axle shaft, to allow more room to work in. The seal costs about $30.
Thanks Henry. In other words, take it to a mechanic. I dont have the room to work on the car. Christian
Jerry, I talked to the mechanic that did the 30K service and he knew about the seepage. It really is like a drip a week and I am being totally anal. He told me not to worry about it. I will probably use Blackhorse Automotive for anything that pops up. But then again Auto Gallery is just down the street. Christian
