2 days and about $60 bucks. Im not completely sold on the heat blanket I made but its doing its job. The Chicklet is cool to the touch after a nice long drive. Im thinking of a reflective windshield sunshade cut to fit.

I forgot a before pic, so I swiped this one from my cars auction.

The Heat Blanket was dropping parts and pieces so.....off to the kitchen table I went.[IMG]

Scrapped off the gunk, cleaned it with acetone and re-glued, two cut to measure pieces of heat shield. The roll was 2 inches too short so I made left and right hand sections. Home Depot and Lowes both carry the stuff. $40ish for a roll.

Removed the intakes, degreased everything I could reach and addressed any signs of rust and corrosion (mainly clamps). Resprayed the upper and lower intakes with a silver/grey hi temp paint. The valve covers are in great shape and the red paint is still vibrant so that was a non issue. Next step is to replace the cloth braided lines......(source???...anyone?)

Put her all back together today.

I also replaced the two front hood struts, door courtesy lights, re-glued the spine of the owners manual and burned a Miami Vice CD. Next spring Ill sand blast the muffler and Cats to bring them back to original condition. Other than that Im calling this little project done for now.

It is not a heat blanket, it is sound insulation and was only even spec'ed for USA and Swiss cars because of their low noise regulations. Many US cars never even had them.

It is perfectly correct even for concours reasons to just have black painted fiberglass.

    Christian,

Nice job, it looks cool. Can you tell me what material you used? I want to do the same to my 88 TR

Rifledriver, I assumed that it was for heat containment purposes because of the silver outer layer. And here I thought I outsmarted the unobtainium Gods with a Home Depot product hahah.

Optimum, At my Home Depot the insulation blanket is by the foam block insulation. At the Lowes it was by hot water heaters. Just tell them you are looking for foil bubble wrap to wrap your hot water heater.

Red Head, I have a wife that works a 9 to 5. As long as the containment crew gets rid of all evidence by the time she gets home, Im good to go.

I had to laugh, because of the "things" I've done. I have a very "High End" double oven I saved from a kitchen remodel, that I could have sold for good $$$$ yet kept to use to heat bake paint on parts. I believe I'm the only guy in town with a Viking double oven in his work shop....Mark

Silver outer layer...on the new material, right? As in your photo the original was grey/brown high-density foam with an adhesive back. Most have failed over the years due to heat though, a heat barrier on top would have resulted in a longer lasting design.

Mine (88.5) either never had or had been fully removed and cleaned-up well (maybe painted over). The SPC calls it "Engine, sound insulation" and lists PN 61541800 for CH (Switzerland) starting from car 76393, and PN 61572900 for US with no car break-in, which should indicate "all" but as Brian points out many original US TR's never had it installed. I assume the PN difference is to accommodate the CHMSL on US models.

I was thinking it was silver but turned gray after years of tarnish.

Ok I just dug out some old pics of my 91. Yup....Brown.
