Just a question for the TR folks on here. I see that there is a 1986 TR on the ads here and it has 2 flying mirrors. Was that a factory option? I've only seen the ones on the drivers side. Thanks.

A number of people had them installed because the asymmetry bothered them. The factory did not do it.
The high mounted mirror on the side away from the driver could not be seen by the driver.

So the dealers would just order the newer mirror from the factory and install it on the A-pillar? I can't believe that owners would be willing to screw around with the originality. But I guess so...

That's a classic car owner perspective. If you look at newer cars (owners who tend to buy sell them within a 1-3years of acquisition) that are not 15-20years old, some of these owners tend to mod them extensively (wheels, carbon, suspensions, tuning, exhaust, etc.). Knowing buyers and a simple scan of the market over the years proves this out.

It is not until the car becomes "classic" and begins to increase in value that buyers and owners want an original car and tend to revert them back to factory specs due to market desirability of an "all original" car.

People used to cut the roof off Daytonas.
Now they weld them back on.

That was the case with a passenger side mirror from the beginning up until 1983 on 308's. Happened all the time

Passenger side mirrors were from right hand drive cars.

And it was idiotic. The passenger side mirror is completely unusable as the A pillar blocks the view of it from the driver seat.
