Just finished my major on the TR. While doing it I removed the FDs and cleaned the plungers, not realizing that I should have measured the plunger depths. Well, I did adjust them, to where no fuel runs in the lines, with the air sensor plate in the rest position. I then adjusted the screws, between the air senesor plate and the FD, according to the WSM.

The car started right away, however, it ran irregularly, and only on the left bank.........the right exhaust pipes where cold. I will check out the coils.

However, while running, I had to feather the gas to keep it running. After a small backfire, the engine stopped, and I couldn't get it to start again.......until the next day, when the same thing happened.

    Any thoughts?

Hi Hank...as I recall with my "sketchy" memory, the depth of the plunger locking nuts on my car were around .020" to .023" (that's inches). I will look through my notes from my last major, hopefully I wrote this figure down somewhere. Since you had a backfire, my gut tells me it's something ignition or electrical, and not fuel related. It seems odd that the car had to sit until the next day to start again, like maybe it was flooded? My car did what you described ONE TIME several months ago. But upon restart is was fine and hasn't done it since. That is the only incident where my car has had a "gremlin" running around. Lately it's been so reliable...that I'm driving the ol'e girl down to Indy early in the morning to the FCA meet. I wish you could be there....

It would be great to "talk shop" with you in person.....

Jeff: The figure was 0.017"-0.020". Trying to "understand" the workings of this system, I started by adjusting the plunger where no fuel comes out of the injector lines, with the fuel pump running, and the sensor plate in rest position. I wasn't able to measure, due to the FD being on the car, but, by looking at it, it seems close. I then turned the air mixture screw CW, to where fuel started to come out, and then backed off 1/2 turn........per WSM.

I will work on this further, if need be, once I figure out the ignition problem.

It almost sounds like you have a plug wire or two in the wrong order.

Hank I had this problem on a 96 355 I did a major on and it ended up being one pin in the electrical connector to the ignition box. One tiny pin out of 30 shut down the entire bank, and we scratched our head for days figuring it out. So check your connectors for the Motronic and see if that helps.
