    It is time to replace the timing belt on my 90 TR and I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a racing timing belt available? I have scoured the internet and have not found anyone that makes one for the TR. I know other ferraris are raced and would therefore need heavy duty race belts. Several TRs have been twin turbo charged and I am assuming heavier duty belts would be required as well. I own a porsche 928 and racing belts are made for it by Gates. The race belts are advertised to be up to 300% stronger and therefor last longer.

    if you would use a "racing timing belt" you have to change this after every race. because it is for racing and not for long time use.
    so happy changing after all 500 - 1000 km :) :) :)

    I would also ask what would require a racing belt to be any stronger than a regular belt? I doubt RPM alone is a factor. Maybe it's the rapid load reversals (down shifting or crank changing load direction between pistons and gearbox).

    Increase in HP would accelerate the engine to redline quicker which would impart a greater load onto the belt but only in one direction. Turbocharging would actually reduce the compression ratio therefore the load on the belt in the opposite direction should be reduced in theory. IDK, just thinking out loud but it is an interesting problem to try and understand.

    No such thing as a racing timing belt for any car, but I'll happily buy a standard belt and sell it to you for 3 times the price and add a sticker to the box that says "racing" ;).

    And more load on the belts when idling than when pulling maximum revs where momentum likely does most of the work. A 4 cylinder or less engine would put even more load on the belts, than a 12 cylinder.

    Have you guys looked at the 928 timing belt path design? -- it makes the 348 design look good ;)

    Rennlist has some good discussion, and the "racing" version definitely has more substantial internal reinforcement (reducing the amount of longitudinal stretch for a given load):

    On a timing belt the length of a football field like on the 928, it probably is a good thing. The TR timing belt just isn't long enough to worry about this issue as much.

    Forgot to add that the 928 timing belt also drives the oil pump and water pump -- loads not present on either TR timing belt.
