I would like clarification regarding tire fitment of the single spline cars that were produced between 1985-1987.

I have generally seen the single spline wheels referred to as "TRX Wheels" & I have read that only Michelin TRX metric tires can be mounted to these wheels.

However I have seen cars equipped with single spline wheels fitted with tires other than Michelin TRX tires.

The single-lug TR wheels came in both 415mm (Michelin TRX tires) and 16" (Goodyear tires) sizes from the beginning on US version TR -- or are you saying that you've seen different tire brands mounted on the 415mm wheels?

OK - I had one of the 1986 (made in 1985, sold here as a 1986) Single Mirror metric wheel cars. It was a real hassle to get these tires, but I finally found a full set through Coker's.

Here is what the guy at Coker told me:

    * Only the Michelin TRX will fit these wheels (and is made in the proper speed rating)

    * Michelin only makes a small batch every 2 or 3 years, the dealers have to reserve them ahead of the run.

    * The fronts are not really for the Testarossa - they also fit a BMW TRX suspension model but are not the same speed rating as the old Testarossa only tire. They are easier to find than the rears because more of them are made per run. The rears are the original molds and construction and are the full high speed rating.

    * The last set of rears he had (which were the only ones I could find anywhere) were a couple of years too old on their DOT date - but I took them anyway because they were better than the cracked and checked rears I had. It took me about a year to find the full set - the fronts from Coker fairly quickly, the rears about 10 months later after this Coker guy searched their inventory and found the out of date pair that I bought.

If I still had this car, I would look for a set of the 16" wheels - Tire Rack and others had the Goodyears listed as ready inventory. Yes, I would keep the original wheels just for originality but use the Goodyears for everyday driving.

I have a USA speck 1988 T/R with 16" wheels and can not find tires anywhere. Tire Rack, Coker etc.. Any leads? Tire rack has racing tires in the correct sizes, nothing else.

Crumb - of course, I just had the guy at the local NTSB check the catalog and he said that the 16" Goodyears were available. Glad I didn't waste money on the set of 16" wheels then.

America's tire sells bf Goodrich in the correct size for a great price. These are the same size the 80s Corvettes used. Just bought a set of these for my 16" knockoffs and I think they perform excellent and have vintage looking sidewalls too.

My '85 TR came with TRX too, but buying a set of used 16" wheels and the above tires was still cheaper than the $2000+ Coker charges for the Serbian made tires. The Goodrich tires are W rated, but are you really gonna top 168 in a 25+ year old car? And if you do, would you trust tires with 80s era engineering made in Serbia? Not me!

Here's a set of 4 16" that have been on eBay for awhile...send him an lower offer:

+1 for the BFG's in 16" sizes.....Decent tires until Coker starts reproducing the OEM gatorbacks....now that would be cool!
