The car is a 1986 TR What is the difference between a gray market car and a U.S. car? This car was imported into Houston Texas and was never registered here. It went directly to Mex city. In time it came back, I’ve been told it needs to go to the lab. Does anyone have hands on experience in this? I’ve been told it costs 4k to7k but I have no Idea. One place said 17500. No matter what. It has cats It has a charcoal can, seals on the Injectors some metal brace on the front bumper metric wheels and a sticker in the door jamb that says made for U.S. I’ve been told it’s a U.S. car and I’ve been told its gray any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks Grant

Obvious visual differences include: US cars have a large rubber bumper surrounding rear license plate area gray market do not, US has 3rd brake light in covering on engine bonnet, US cars have flush mounted side marker lights in fenders at all 4 corners, gray market cars have small round amber directional blinker lights in the front fenders just aft of the wheel wells. US cars have the odo in the dash with speedo whereas gray market cars will have the odo in the center console along with oil temp and fuel gauges. Gray cars also had a spring loaded cassette tape holder in the glove box US cars do not. Those are some of the differences i can think off the top but I'm sure there's more. Should be enough determine what the car is.

What is the 8th letter in the VIN? If it is A, then it should be a US car.

Thanks guys for the quick response. The 8th letter in the VIN is a B. What does this mean? If this is a gray market car, has anybody gone to the laboratory with one, and what do they have to change? It looks like it has the factory seals on the injectors where you adjust the richness. It looks like it has the factory charcoal cannister and air pump. The car's in storage, I'm going to go look if the odometer is in the speedomer in the dash, or in the center console.

Thanks in advance for the help to everyone,
    Grant

    8th VIN digit = B = LHD Euro

What is the engine family? It's marked on the engine block at cyl #6 -- should be something like F113A, F113A040, F113A046, F113B, etc..

(I would guess an early euro would be F113A, but it would also be without charcoal canisters, no cats, and no air injection system if unmodified. An early Swiss TR, F113A046 would have a "pumpless" air injection system and maybe some of the other emission stuff.)
