I have searched a number of threads related to starting (not starting). My problem seems a little different than most. Sometimes (maybe 1 out of 5 times when I try to start the car) I turn the key to my 86 TR and the starter doesn't engage. All the dash lights come on, the fans start, etc. but nothing. First time it happened I honked the horn (my scientific method to determine battery strength) and it blew strong.

If I turn the key off, then back on it works fine. Sometimes I have to do it 3-4 times, pausing for a fews seconds between each try before anything happens. Sometimes if I just hold the key forward (for about 5 secs) it starts. (Now to me, holding the key foward for 5 seconds seem an eternity)

    Any suggestions?

ps - doesn't seem to be a hot vs cold issue as it has happened first thing in the morning as well as after I stop for gas.

That is a little different (not being worse when warm), but you're left needing to attack the same area -- measure the voltage on the B (white) wire going to terminal 50 on the starter solenoid:

If it gets to +8~9V or more, but the solenoid doesn't fire -- probably best to get a replacement WAI/Ace Electric solenoid.

If the B wire at the solenoid stays 0V -- check the condition of the connections where it passes thru the "w" and "y" connectors at the fuse/relay PCB and the C11 connector (under the coolant tank).
