I hope I am posting this in the right place, I am looking to buy/build a track day car, I have owned a 348 GTB 1994, a 360 f1,and a 360 manual, and a 575,, basically loved them all but lately have been enjoying more time at the track,
My wish was to have a track day car as opposed to a full house race car, but I have seen some very well priced 360 challenge cars lately as well, and that's not out of the question,
we have some great club track events and some amazing closed road targa events, here in New Zealand . I`am not going out there to win, just to enjoy the thrill of driving, and to enjoy myself, I want something quick enough to scare me but not kill me, but something reliable and strong, I love the V12s,but iam not stuck on it, my job brings me into contact with some very well priced Ferraris that perhaps aren't so mint but fine for a track car, basically I was hoping someone here with racing knowledge of these cars could offer some advice, I started off thinking 348,(cheap late model rear engine V8)then thought 456(cheap V12 but heavy)then spotted the 360 challenger cars, and by then I`d confused my self enough to come here and seek some advice, thanks in advance for your thoughts

Well as everything, it depends on your budget...
You can certainly pick up a cheap 348 and modify it for track days. Alternatively, finding a cheap 360 challenge would probably be a good deal upfront as you get all you need built-in. However, I understand the maintenance cost for 360 are higher as you need specialist tools which probably reduces DIY scope.
I would have advised to get a 355 CH but as values have picked up recently (don't know about NZ market though) it may (or may not) be an option. If you can get a nice 355 CH, I would definitively go for it. More performance than 348 and possibility to keep it street legal provides a nice plus to attend track days. Plus it's still old fashion car so maintenance is easier to control.

I would stay away from V12s for track days (unless you can get a very cheap car to begin with). They are heavier and put more stress on their components such as brakes and tires. Obviously everything can be done, but begining with the lighter, more compact car seems like a logical step.

hi, thanks for the response, budget is between 50000- 100000, depending on the car, I`ve been looking on race cars direct and there are a lot of 430 challenge cars which are advertised very reasonably at around the 40 to 60 sterling which fits right in so they look quite good , does any one here know how many hrs you get from a 430 engine before it requires a freshin up , and I see a lot advertised having been rebuild using cosworth parts, instead of Ferrari parts, is this just a cost thing?
