I live in So Cal wondering if you can take a Spider out on any of the local tracks? I have been told you need hoops as high as your helmet to go out on most So Cal tracks. Anyone done this in a spider with the factory set up?

Definitely not in an F355 Spider (I've got one and have looked into it). I would guess you could in a car that comes with a roll bar though.

I do not think any group allows converts on the track except those with built-in factory bars which the 348spy does not have. However, as an avid Socal racer I would love to see you get your 348 on track. I used to race one of those. If you are interested I can help you make a custom bolt in rollover hoop. The cost will be usual Stooge fees you buy parts and supply chicken wings. We could do this really fast if Plugzit still has my old 348C cage where I could use it as a pattern to bend the rollcage tubing. If you want a slick fabrication but be cheap about it, I could make the rollover hoop and you have a fit and finish guy build you the floor anchors to bolt the cage to. It can be done very cleanly to retain mostly a stock look. Maybe you get together with Plugzit and I this weekend and we can show you how it would look. Westcoast racing is running a track event 10/23 weekend and the FCA used to run a group with them but not anymore. A few straggler Ferraris from FCA still show up for WCR events. I might be there either in the 550 or a Z06 racecar. Next weekend I'll be at AAA speedway helping to instruct some guys and giving rides if you want to come by for that.

fatbillybob, thanks for the offer, the car is a 355 not a 348 so not sure if it will work. Also do not want to have a roll bar in the car for everyday driving.

Maybe I can take the car autocrossing? Not as fun as the track but did some today at a Mercedes AMG event and had a good time. Hummm can you rent a 355 Challenge car to drive anywhere?

How do the vintage guys get on the track? I have seen plenty of open air vintage cars on the track.

Generally the clubs will let you do autocross but not high speed events.

Having been upside down twice in my old racing days I would never recommend running high speed without a roll bar. Both times I never thought the situation would have caused me to go upside down and both times I was looking at the world upside down far faster than you can imagine.

Runner side down, shiny side up!

Been upside down too. My new number is #88 on my racecar because 88 is still 88 if you are upsidedown.

To the OP my suggestion was to make the rollover hoop removeable.

To the last poster that spider has those dinky rollover hoops under the top that qualify barely for most tracks. I don't think it is very safe but it does meet the letter of the rules.

Also, vintage racers all have to meet min safety in the larger organizations like VARA HMSA etc. Cool thing about vintage is you usually can't go as fast. Bad thing about vintage is 1960's crush zones did not exist. A modern chassis is surprisingly safe and you really have to thing long and hard before you modify a modern safety system, with seats, harness etc.

Crap FBB, everytime I see that wreck I am thankful you came out so well! I appreciate your point here (like parking those drunk driving wrecks by high schools), but what a tragedy this picture is. Moral of the story - bad wreck, solid protection, healthy driver lives to eat more wings.

360s have 2 rolls bars behind the seats... thus, he was allowed on track
