Too young to remember the team or driver, so I looked up the results from the '86 season: Ret Ret Ret DNQ Ret Ret Ret Ret Ret Ret Ret 11 Ret Ret Ret Ret
Yes, a sad story of chronic unreliability, if they ran at 720hp it was a question of what blew first - the engine or transmission. We're talking 10 laps at best. So they backed the boost off to the point where it made about 400hp and were lucky to qualify last. This car sold for GBP45K at the 2015 Silverstone Classic auction. Current owner has changed the livery slightly. It's a cheap car, but then again what you'd spend to make it useable would put the total cost similar to a DFV car that was eligible for F1 masters.
https://www.facebook.com/charles.nardo/posts/1306746209410835 great stuff - I adore the cars from this era... so elegant. Watching the way the tub floats between the suspension makes my heart ache.
I know it's not the usual racing for this thread, but ouch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Vn60dXqNM4
Oh man, that's terrible. That green Porsche pulled up in time, and then had a ton and a half of lumbering Ford GT wipe it out. One or two of those will be someone's pride and joy with thousands of hours work and very little money left in the kick to repair them.
Saw this on my FB feed this morning. This orange Porsche is visible in that footage as well, sounds like it wasn't the first he's been hit, poor bugger. That track looked very crowded, too crowded? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Year year we know you aussies have done it a few times in the past.. but some overseas reporters think NZ is another state of aus..
Yes, after the Abu Dhabi GP to watch them test the Challenge cars Didn't drive on it but looks the goods
But why I'm not a fan of reverse grid races. I assume it was as I've watched those Toranas before and they are slow (probably only cars not cheating). In the end Supercar Masters is pretty much v8 Supercars with some poor unfortunate old body stuck on top ... a BS series IMO, and nothing historic about it. Pete
this was Touring Car Masters, cars are modified but nowhere near a V8SC. Crash was typical first lap/cold tyres/cold brakes situation that we see so often. Winton is a narrow track, very hard to avoid a spinning car in front of you, the first corner is a sharp left-right after a short run from the start line, 1st lap pile-ups are common. A lot of nice cars written off because of red mist stupidity, I feel very sorry for the owners.
Apologies for getting the name wrong. Yes Touring Car Masters. The only difference between these cars and a V8SC is they don't have the rear mounted gearbox and independent rear suspension, and can have bigger engines . When this class came out my first thought was awesome, but then I read build stories and watched the cars come out, and the Bowe and Richards type cars start with bare shells, engine sent to same builders as V8SC's and they build them as modern as they can. There is NOTHING classic or historic about them, a complete joke and drivers like Bowe, Richards, Seton, etc. really need to have a good long hard look at themselves in the mirror and understand they RETIRED, and learn to take it down a peg or two! Have a look at the for sale section: http://www.touringcarmasters.com.au/for-sale. Seton designed suspension, 620 to 680 hp, Brembo mono-block calipers, etc. all stupid stuff unless you have bottomless pockets. I've been to Winton with a friend of mine who raced a 1970 something 911 Carrera (engine blew the time I went with him ). That friend also had a friend that raced an old Group A Commodore, we both went to Phillip Island with him and the cheating in the Historic Group A class is laughable ... for **** sake why can't people that need to win at all costs race a modern race car and leave the historic/classic racing to enthusiasts. [EDIT:]I've gone to the Touring Car Masters site and one of the Torana's is a Pro-Masters car so I'm probably wrong re-reverse grid and these cars are probably not the same Toranas I'm thinking off ... or have since had an extensive + expensive rebuild [/EDIT] Pete
cheating saddens me too and believe me, it's in every category of historic racing everywhere in the world. It's pointless because once the first guy gets away with it, everyone follows and the winner is whoever spends the most. F5000's putting down better lap times than an F1 Ferrari, e-types in the UK beating 250GTO's - give me a break! It is what it is and fortunately the racing remains a lot of fun wherever you are in the field.
