First thing I thought of as well, you would normally expect some type of locking mechanism

Unfortunately not. Hewland just specify a very high torque for tightening it, which I must have fallen short of last time, despite my 400lb/ft rattle gun.

    And Alfafest and Fiat nationals....
The attached is appropriate, just replace the word ‘motorcycle’ with ‘Ferrari’ and all’s well.
BTW, co-driver and I are still planning to go for a 10 day tootle around the country as there MAY still be a track day at Wakefield Park.

Enough vibration can overcome any torque.

Which is why we use lockwire in the aircraft industry as well as Loctite

FFS, I thought Hewland was a reputable company, maybe they mean you apply a specific torque on a NEW nut .... we use to change nuts on aircraft parts that were given a lifetime but I suppose the racing industry just assumes you use new parts on a rebuild

how many world championships were won by cars with Hewland transaxles?
you can't lockwire a rotating shaft.
you can't use loctite on a high torque assembly that needs to be undone regularly - in fact there are many, many places you can't use loctite, e.g. flywheel bolts, headbolts, the list goes on..

Well normally they would manufacture a nut you can put a split pin through where the shaft has a hole drilled in it so it doesn't come off

In any race team gearboxes are stripped and checked after every race meeting. Dog rings have a maximum design life of about 200 miles - the length of a F1 GP or an Indy circuit race.

Except the shafts are hollow oil ways, with a fitting on the rear cover that inserts into each end, which is why it isn't pinned. Hewland gearboxes have an oil pump and are pressure lubricated.

When it comes to a race car (or a Ferrari) you start from the assumption that very smart engineers design things for a reason.

Made up a new set of leads today, I really like the MSD kits with 50ohm wire (1/10 of normal resistance) plus they include a neat crimping tool.

10 points for anyone who can spot what's wrong with the dissy cap :)
