You can't compare gravel rallying to tarmac rallying.
A gravel road has a pretty even coefficient of friction across the road surface - the dynamics of the car are fairly predictable, and the speeds are quite low when you break traction. That said, gravel rallies are usually enjoyed by drivers at club level, moving up the ranks as they gain experience. It's possible to partake in a dozen or more gravel rallies in a year without too much trouble. Tarmac road surfaces have varying degrees of grip, both along the roadway and from edge to edge. The grip levels are far higher, especially with sticky rubber, and loss of traction happens at much higher speeds, and often quite suddenly. A typical driver in a tarmac rally may only compete once or twice per year. As anybody who's ever raced anything will tell you, if you don't practice, you de-skill pretty quickly. Although CAMS (or whoever they are now) has tightened up prerequisites for a rally licence, it's still laughably easy compared with getting a circuit licence.

When we did the Tour i 2017 the lady who was part of the original organisers (known as Mama Targa but I can’t remember her name) was in our packet. She made several comments that the original intention was NEVER a ‘race’ but a spirited drive on closed stages.

So sad for the family affected by this tragedy, but also concerned for the future of the event and all it means to Tasmania...

You and Steve need to get a room so you can be indignant together :)

FFS I said that they try to avoid overtaking but if you pass someone, the slower car won't take you back. It's not racing. I have done a few years of tarmac rallying...

Medeike is a certifiable lunatic. That behaviour would not be tolerated now.

and btw, Medeike overtook Scott dangerously, not the other way around.

I ran in the NSW Rally Championship, the speeds were not "quite low". We also ran tarmac stages, notably at Bathurst.

But I agree in general. Because you're constantly sliding on gravel, you don't have the issue of the car snapping out.

Targa Tasmania is finished now, in future it'll be a poseur event only.

You are wrong so an apology should be forthcoming instead of a snide remark Ian.

That’s her. Here’s the route we did in 2017 so I think it’s my memory that’s failed! Didn’t seem nearly that long on the day! Time flies when you’re having fun...

No Whomos on that trip! Actually food is generally pretty good throughout Tas, but to be honest we were so funned out (tired) by the end of the day I don’t remember any of the dinners except Strachan, and that only because it was so unbelievably cold and wet!

QUESTION FOR THE SYDNEY HISTORIC RACING GUYS:
I’m thinking of coming down to watch the June meeting - any tips on accomodation nearby? Alpha Hotel is already booked out for the Sat night; where’s the nearest alternative place to look (no idea about the surrounding area...)

I could very easily live in Tassie around the Huon Valley region and have a boat at Kettering .

I fell in love with this property ,if only it would come up for sale again .

Over there twice last year once in the Portker and once in T Series.

Couple of years before E-Type once and the Corniche twice .

People go there to race knowing the risks involved. They should be allowed to continue to do so!
