Today I've found myself wondering about what is probably a stupid question to most of the more experienced people on here, but

I've done a total of maybe five or six track days in my life, all organised by either the Ferrari club or the Ferrari dealer.

I'm considering doing a day at The Bend with the Lotus.
They offer various packages. The one I'm interested in is where you get 5 x 20 minute sessions and it's kind of one level up from the total numpty option.

I know that if I do something stupid and put myself into the wall, or do a Moretti and fall off the track every second corner, or anything else involving just myself and my car gets damaged that's my problem and my expense.

    The question is:

What happens if some dickhead in a VL Commodore comes flying up the inside and hits me, or ****s up their braking and slams into me, puts me into the wall, etc, etc.
Do I have any recourse? Or can my car get written off through no fault of my own and I just have to wear it?

I think you'd be pretty well screwed. Stay away from dickheads - there's usually plenty of room to keep to a clear track.

You have no practical recourse. Each owner pays their own damage. Theoretically you could sue someone who caused your damage, but the legal costs would be circa $100K at least and in Australia you would rarely be awarded costs, only the value of the damage.

The best thing you can do is to circulate at a race pace - if you're cruising you increase your chances of being collected.

My advice would be to pay for your own driving coach for the day (I can recommend a couple of good guys from Sydney, e.g. Bart Mawer often does Bend training) and they'll passenger with you and keep you on it, plus you'll learn much more than driving around on your own. Driving is like any sport - you will only improve with training. $2K for a coach for the day (+- travel costs) if much cheaper than you losing the car because you haven't learnt how to avoid or recover a situation.

Second attempt at posting this. Expect some traffic. The track is amazing and I did eventually get a clean lap in.

    It rained all day

Needed wipers on the inside of the screen

Lousy visibility at speed; the wall after turn 12 comes out of nowhere !
