Trackday Accident

AROCA organised a track day at Winton today. Just before lunchtime, one of those Lotus 7-Westlake type kit cars backed itself into the wall after the driver lost control through the flip flop. On impact the car burst into flames. Officials were on site very quickly, but it took three fire extinguishers to put out the fire. FWIW my understanding is his injuries were mostly caused by the rearward impact, not the flames.
A poignant reminder of the dangers in motorsport.

 

It happened in my session, so I was on track. It's also not the sort of thing I would take photo's of anyway.

 

At least I got the W right!
Jerkoffs pissed me off by running short track, so whilst 1:04-1:05 might sound impressive, not a reflection of a full track laptime. I think the use of the short track contributed to the accident.

Back on topic, guy looks like having fractured skull.

 

Helmet hitting roll bar with great force. Guy was old enough to have a son in his 20's who was apparently watching from with 50m of the impact point. I just checked the data, I am doing approx 110kmh at the point he lost control.

 

Scott was actually quicker than me. He's been around Winton a few thousand times, races historics etc.

 

He was in my car stupid!!

 

Yes, as do we all. His son was understandably very upset. I can't even imagine what it must feel like to watch something like that unfolding.

 

No I was slower actually, but I'll take the glory anyway. Scott owns Malvern Motorsports, has campaigned in sportscar racing on a State/local level for many years. His current passion is for touring cars in historics.
And no, I think it should have been "he was in stupids car"
