I have a question--my partner had something untrue posted about her on a community (CitySearch) website. Because of similar posts and other factors, she believes that this is a libelous (sp?) statement by a former colleague with whom she has a very poor relationship. Her attorney has contacted the site, and they have said there is no way to "trace" the post. Is this true, or what questions need to be asked to determine if this is the case? I do understand that she won't necessarily be able to identify the poster, but can the address (physical) be determined.

    Thanks--Scott

It all depends on how far you want to take the issue. The music companies/recording industry seem to have had some sucess with it so as long as you are willing to spend the $......

The process would be along the following lines:

    1. Retrieve poster's IP address, time and date of post, from the board admin (they should have logs). If they tell you they dont have the IP address, its either their not being honest or they are using a very crude message board system.

    2. The IP address will reveal the ISP.

    3. Obtain a Court Order, the ISP will disclose which user was using that particular IP address at that time and day.

Goodluck obtaining a court order for such a case.

^^^^^ Quality Post. That is EXACTLY the procedure. I doubt this is a case your friend will make much progress with, but best of luck to her!

Why not have them remove it for starters. Threaten lawsuit......it seems to work here ;)
