I am considering trading in my 2010 Cali. It is a highly optioned Silverstone/black car with 3200 miles on it. What do you guys think I should get for it in trade on my new 458? Would I be better off consigning it instead?

    Trade it.

Take the loss but get a new car quicker. And, selling a car is nothing but a PITA.

Trade it and make a deal when you do.

Let the dealer make something on it and have him get a car to your sooner so you don't have to wait so long and you don't need to figure out who to sell or consign it to and you don't worry about every little bump in the road making a scratch or every additional mile on the clock you are putting on until you get rid of it.

Every day you don't trade it you are losing more money. If you're going to get rid of it and you're worried about resale value, get rid it now and get a new car as quickly as you can.

Traded my Cali for a 458 Spider in May. My list price was $10K less and I received $175K. It had almost 5k miles on the odometer.

Probably the going rate for 2010's no matter what the original MSRP was. They will ask $195K and settle for 190 or 185.

They really don't count much on options in resale. It's just age, mileage, condition, and color combo.

If you sell it yourself rather than consigning it to the dealer you will go to the very bottom of the 458 list.
    Want a car soon?
    Must play the game.

In Colorado (and I assume most other states) you pay sales tax on the net price. If you sell the car yourself you pay tax on the whole thing. 10% of $300k is $30k. 5% is $15k

    So if you have a $200k trade-in that's a $20k savings at 10% and $10k savings at 5%.

Oregonians pay no sales tax. Nevermind.

Californians get no break. They pay all the tax on the entire MSRP. There is no deduction for the trade value of the previous car, even though you already paid the sales taxes on it once.

Nevada however only charges for the difference between the trade and the new car. On something like a 458 to 458 spider, it's a huge difference. 8% of 300K versus 8% of 30K

So if in California, consider leasing your interim Ferrari (the one you get while you wait for the one you ordered or are about to order) and then you only pay tax on the lease payments. When you turn the car in, it is like trading in a car you otherwise would have bought. But you didn't have to pay tax on the entire price of the interim car. And the dealer should treat your lease as a sale in terms of your position on the "list", since they get to re-sell or lease again the car you turned in.
