After a long time of hesitation, I decided to go for it. The Daytona will be replaced by a 456 GT and a Lotus Elise.

I can understand your hesitation, Rijk, but I like your choice of replacements!

Malcolm, I've thought about getting a 456 off and on for a few years, and I'd really appreciate your insight. Would you mind posting it here?

    thanks

    CCR,

It hasn't been traded yet. I'm negotiating with WWoC in Spring Valley NY.

I do not know about this....You are trading an appreciating asset for two depreciating ones. A Daytona will always be THE CAR. Now and again, I get frustrated with my old one because of lack of comfort, conveniences, and breakdowns, but in the end, I know I would miss it. It is unique and classy.
I understand about the Elise, particularly if you like track days. But regarding the 456:
Do you have to have the M? 95s seem to be a much better value, about half the price, and not half the car. I test drove one yesterday. While it had a salvage title, it did pull like a mother. Interior bits were melted, and it rattled a bit, but the understated V12 executive express did speak to me in volumes...
    :)

    Luke,

I have an Elise in Europe, and driving that car is such a hoot (minus the sound). I keep the Daytona nowadays Upstate NY, and the roads are there very narrow and winding. The brakes of the Daytona are not up to the task and the car is too heavy. I always preferred the vintage cars, because I find the modern cars are too good, but the Daytona needs open sweeping roads, and I have none there.

Also, I need to be able to take the kids around. So there were basically two choices: Add a car to the Daytona (i.e. a Cooper S Works) or, what I'm doing now, replace the Daytona with the 456 (tubi) and Elise.

I am an authorized Lotus Dealer and also have a wide selection of various 456's for sale at anyone time...

I would be happy to liberate your Daytona in a trade deal...

If it were me however, I would keep the Daytona.

You can see full information and photos on all my cars at www.symbolicmotors.com

    Hi Bill ,

I think i saw you at the 2003 TDF with a 308 ? Can you provide me with more information about it ? It looked different than the Entremont car.
    Is it a Michelotto ?

    Thanks !

    Andrew

    Bill,

I love that 1938 Alfa 8C you have at Symbolic. You should edit the vehicle info though:

"these amazing vehicles are easily able to out-break, out-handle and out-accelerate many modern machines".

I think you should change "out-break" to "out-brake", otherwise, who could afford to drive it?

Contact me privately for information about my Michelotto GTB/M.

As for the mistakes on our web site. Duly noted...sorry I am just too buzy and rather lazy to figure out how to change it... but thanks for the nice comments.

I have put about 2000 miles on the street in the 8c2900 and a little over 1000 racing it at various venues around the country.

    Ciao,

    Bill

Sorry to hear that Rijk.. Still, the 456 is a beautiful car.

As for the Elise, I'd better maintain a diplomatic silence...

    John

PS Did you think about a 997..? Not big enough for the kids I guess.

Would you mind giving a very short version of your impression of this car?
I love this car and can see myself in one someday.

i'm depressed. whenever my 3 1/2 year old caught a glimpse of your car at WWofC it just about made him jump off the ground ("dee-tow-na!"). hopefully it will go to another local area owner.

i've never driven a 456, but am a big fan. good luck. and r.i.p. silver dee-tow-na

I am a bit confused.. Your taste have moved up to appreciate one of the finest in automobile, the Daytona. Now, you are back to trade it in for a not so appreciated 456. How did you come up with this idea?

I believe it is a big step down ward. I love the Elise. Just get the Elise. Keep the Daytona. I am sure your have other sadan to take care of the kids.

If you go through with it, I think you will have fun with the 456 for about a month. Then you will miss the daytona bigtime...

I am with Bill Noon on this. I have both the Daytona and the 456M. I would sell the 456 in a heartbeat if I could have only one, even though I love it too. Keep the daytona, buy a kid car.

    Exactly.

This plan may sound sane now, but Im betting your going to have a serious case of the Daytona blues within 6 months and be shopping for another within 2 years. Meanwhile the 456 will have dropped another 15%.

Just buy the elise for the track and keep the Daytona!
