"Racing is life, everything before and after is just waiting"
Nobody is being "touchy" whose understanding of David S's remark was that this sudden, accidental death wasn't tragic because the driver happened to be older. Which at first blush is what he appears to have said. That sort of talk deserves objection. Some commenters have suggested an alternative reading of the remark that is more charitable. But that reading is not what the "touchy" people were responding to. I'm inclined to believe the alternative reading because the other one seems pointlessly mean. But it was certainly a bad choice of words.
That was a far more relevant statement when the safety of racing was so terrible which in this case is closer to the truth. I've always heard it "there are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountain climbing..." but no one ever provides a citation, and there's doubt that Hemingway ever said it at all. An quick perusal of the 'net suggests that the quote actually belongs to author Barnaby Conrad.
I settled on Barnaby Conrad. Ernest Hemingway Quote Ernest Hemingway FAQ: Quotations The Big Apple: ?Auto racing, bullfighting, and mountain climbing are the only real sports?all others are games?
So Hemingway was nothing more than a cheap plagurist? Does that mean he stole The Old Man and The Sea from Charlie the Tuna? Image Unavailable, Please Login
