When checking the gearbox oil level do you screw the dipstick in or just set it on the top of the hole?

Screw the dipstick down I believe. I just did my fluid this past week.

    Per the manual: 7.35

CHECKING THE TRANSMISSION DIFFERENTIAL OIL LEVEL

    - Idle the engine for about two minutes and wait for five minutes after stopping the engine.

    - Unscrew the oil filler cap (a) found on the left hand side of the transmission. Check the oil level with the cap resting on the seat. It should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" notches on the oil dipstick.

I interpreted "resting on the seat" as screwed down. The "seat" being the actual area that the top of the plug "sits" on once screwed down.

But they also say to "unscrew" the cap in the first sentence of the same bullet point. If they wanted you to screw it down to check the fluid they would use those words rather than have it say merely, "resting on the seat," wouldn't they? At least that's how I read it. The instructions are not the model of clarity and I suppose can be read both ways.

IMHO..."resting" on top, is not screwed in.
I'll play the straight guy on that one and let others chime in.

I interpreted it as resting, not screwed in, on the seat. I'm not going to run my tranny with too little lubricating fluid. If you screwed it in and had the fluid at the max mark it would probably be OK though..

Same procedure as checking the engine oil -- resting on the seat not screwed down.

I've recently been told by a Ferrari mechanic whom I trust that, regardless of what the WSM says, the correct oil level is obtained with the dipstick screwed in.

Maybe we need to see the instructions in Italian, to be sure of an accurate translation!

I'm Italian, and the WSM translation is accurate (copied below) ie it says it should not be screwed down - but it wouldn't be the first time the WSM is wrong...
