Johns930-3rd gear is usually the culprit. They can't find anything when I bring it in.

    Hi Greg,

thanks so much for bringing your problems to this forum - I think it is helpful to everybody to know that there can be issues.

I was wondering, though, if you could take some time elaborating on exactly what the issue is, and how it came about. Firstly, this could help you because dealers in other countries might have seen this and been able to fix it. Secondly, other owners might be on the verge of losing a gear or experiencing problems and they might be able to anticipate better if they know what went wrong with yours. Thirdly, we'd like to help you get the issue resolved if we can, and the more info the better. Fourthly, if there's other people out there with the same issues, you stand stronger knowing it's not a one-off thing.

Could you provide some answers to the following?

    1. What is the issue exactly with 3rd gear? Does it not engage, does it engage slowly, does it make noises when engaging (or not)? Does it not engage initially but does so eventually? Does the car lunge or jerk when you engage it?
    2. How did the problems start? Was it out of the blue? Was there a run-up that gradually got worse? Any tell-tale noises or behaviour?
    3. What exactly did the workshop tell you when they couldn't find anything? Did they take the car out for a test drive? Did you show them the problem in person, on the move? What measures did they take to get to the bottom? Are you happy with the service? Do you feel that the dealer should have done more?

I sincerely hope we find a way to get your issues resolved soon.

    All the best,

    Onno

3rd gear is fine for me.
my issue is actually common on the 458 challenge circuit and well known by ferrari race techs but under different circumstances of course since i dont track my 458, but it loses reverse, 2nd gear, and 6th gear.
how do i know that? because i cant get in reverse, and when driven forward in auto mode, 1st gear jumps to 3rd, then 4, 5, and skips 6th to go to 7th when accelerating.

this happened to me twice in the last 3 months, once was on my banzai drives, and the other in my garage trying to park. my 458 has 4200 miles and is a year old since new.
both times it fixed itself after shut down and parked for few minutes, so dealer didnt have to do anything when i brought it in, but they did offer to look at it in greater detail if i leave it.

Maybe a moderator should merge all these threads and make a sticky, as this is becoming a quite common problem wich deserves attention.

Thanks for the feedback. To answer some of the questions

It will not engage. There doesn't seem to a pattern we have been able to determine. RPM? Temp? Dunno. That is the frustration. It happened out of the blue shortly after purchase. It's been test driven many many times. The shop seems to have troubleshot what they can and took it for another opinion too. I finally am having them replace the whole damn thing.

Got it back and it finally seems to be free of transmission problems.

Good to hear it may be solved. I was going to say that it sounded like a clutch engage problem on the particular shaft that carries R, 2, 4, and 6 gears (vs. the one that carries 1, 3, 5, 7) but you did not mention an issue with 4th gear.
