Anyone used a U-Haul trailer to transport their 308? The commercial folks want between $800 -$1000 to transport my running and drivable 308GTB the 500 miles between Tulsa and Houston. I could almost buy a trailer for that! Anyway, the issue is clearance and loading/unloading. Please share your experiences. -rick '79308GTB # 28133

I recently sold my '84 Mondial QV, and the guy who bought it picked it up with a U-Haul open trailer. The "trick" to getting the car on is to jack up the front end of the trailer as high as possible (attached to the car hitch, of course), and put some 2x10s under the end of the ramps coming out about 3' to raise the front end of the car up before it reaches the ramps. Otherwise, it went on fine. My Mondi was a Euro car with the low spoiler/air dam in front, so if it worked I would think that a 308 would go on as well. I recently put a 308 on my own trailer, which is set up similar to a U-Haul, and it went on just fine. Unless the car has been significantly lowered, it should work.

Thanks Steve. Sounds like you have the answer. BTW, my 308 is a Euro too and has the deep chin spoiler. Rick.

Is your 308 a silver GTB that R.R. helped restore years ago? If so, I want to congratulate you, a shot of that car was on my desktop wallpaper for years.

    Here's a tip.

If "you" are the one renting the trailer from U-Haul, don't say you are hauling a Ferrari. Simply tell them you are hualing a Camry, Geo , Corvette or something else. The word Ferrari does not exist in the computer system and if it's not there the vo-tech flunkies who run the local U-Haul can't do much for you.

The front spoiler is the bigest issue. If you can find a place to load it where you can lessen the angle of approach it will help. You may also need to keep the 2x10"s on the trailer as a U-Haul trialer has a channel with a fairly high lip.

If it's only 500 miles, why don't you drive?

I borrowed a flat bed trailer from a friend (thanks Greg!) and towed my 328. The tips here are accurate: Get the nose of the trailer as HIGH as you can, but LEAVE it connected to the hitch! I bought 2 12' 2x12's and had each of them cut into a 3, 4 and 5 foot length. I put down the 5' board first, put the 4' board on top of it, and the 3' board on top of that. Then the ramp to the trailer.

I also learned that if there's a hill around, it'll make your life much easier. My driveway has a reasonably good slope to it, so I backed the trailer into the drive. Right before the trailer wheels hit the driveway from the street, I parked the trailer. That put the rear of the trailer that much higher in relation to the nose of the Ferrari.

It was no big deal, but don't let anyone else drive the car on the trailer for you. If something goes wrong, you need to blame yourself. I'd also suggest having a car-guy with you to guide and watch, rather than a wife/girlfriend.

I'd mirror Meisters suggestion though. For 500 miles, DRIVE IT!

I use U-Haul all the time with my 85 308. Never any problems.
