I have a buyer for my 1998 355 but it needs to get transported from NJ to Phoenix, AZ. I always thought an enclosed truck was the only way to go but a few people have told me it's not worth the extra money. (There's about $1,000 difference). What is the consensus here? Thx

who is paying the insurance on the transport ? I would think if buyer is paying from your house to him he should be asked the question. In my mind if I was paying for it I would want it covered.

Enclosed. Too many flying stones, hail storms, ice storms, sand storms, truck stops between NJ and AZ. If it was 200 miles, look for a good day and go open and cheap, but not that distance. Especially when you really have no say in the drivers route since he may be dispatched mid drive to pick up a car delaying yours. Even with insurance, the 355 would, if damaged, alway then have an asterik on it due to the paint job it needed in 2007. The difference should not be that much either, shop around.

Absolutely agree with this. (Except most of these cars have been repainted up front for stones... no asterisk for that.)

Would you want your Ferrari parked out overnight at a truck stop?

Enclosed, absolutely! If was the family mini van or a honda civic......fine, but a Ferrari for that distance and all the unforeseen hazards it could face, no way.

Have him fly out and drive it home (save $2k), otherwise ALWAYS covered carrier.

    Guess I'll take that as a compliment...=)

I open trailer all my cars. My dad used to take his cars in the 70's/80's from WI-FLA open trailer...not a single problem.

In this case though....probably enclosed. I say that because if there is any controvesry on the buyers end as to where this chip, dent or anything else came from, are the potential hassles and BS from a long distance buyer worth $1000K??

I've had to deal with big hassels for items shipped long distance (improperly) that were far less valuable than a 355.

As above, I have no problem open trailering my own stuff.... a purchase/legal agreement/sale/etc is worth the extra $.

    Good luck.

Thanks everyone, you've convinced me to upgrade to the enclosure. (my car has never spent a night outside, even though I 'm selling it, still can't bear to do it).

don't forget to demand door to door. there is a transfer point next to my office. you don't want your ferrari spending a night outside there. saw a real nice mopar with trophies in the back seat sitting out there for two days before the next guy came by and picked it up. i'm not talking about a lot either. these things get dumped on the street.

Most transport companies... once they realize its a Ferrari, will require enclosed transport... they wont even allow open carrier. They dont want the liability of even the smallest paint damage from road dabris. DAS is the biggest company... for Ferrari's, they only offer enclosed, door-to-door service.

Funny this is being talked about, my girlfriend and I finally received her truck tonight, after being shipped open-transport from West Virginia. Guess what? Only 5 days late, and with a huge
spider-web fracture on the windshield from a rock. At $400-500 for a new one with labor, no biggie. But $2000 just for the windshield(no labor) on my 355 would scare the crap out of me for 8-15 days.
If you read the fine print, road debris, hail, and all other acts of God are excluded from being a viable claim in most transporters' terms and conditoins. COVERED IS THE ONLY WAY!

Enclosed....and the buyer should be handling the transport anyway....because if you pay for it....technically you as the seller can be liable for the transporter.

It should not be $1000 MORE to go enclosed....about half that. $1500-1800 for an enclosed shipper to make that run.

I used FedEx to transport my F355 from NJ to PHX enclosed. I recommend going that way.

I have a friend that drives an open car carrier and has told me many stories that has happened to him, one thing he says is at truck stops it's not uncommon to feel his truck start rocking when he is trying to sleep and to find people climing on his trailer, either to look at the cars or to steal parts off them. Ship enclosed.
