360/430 owners. So far, I have not found a signal to read the RPM to traqmate.

    Thanks

If you can't pull it off the ECU, you can use an MSD inductive pickup. http://www.msdignition.com/2006/06-22.htm

Just bought several for some Elise and Exige installs. Summit has them for less than $50. It takes the pulse off the impulse wire to the coil pack. Not a direct connection. Works well for the TraqSync, TrachTach or TraqData II.

Peter, no splice necessary, I would just need to locate the impulse wire to the coil pack in the engine compartment, and run this cable to the cabin, link it to TraqTach and adjust the frequency value in traqmate to 8 (most likely).

    Piece of cake !!!

    Thanks a lot.

I'm aware that the ODB-II port has a pin for RPM inputs (used for emission test or smog test). I'm going to try this one as well. There are some pretty cool Ferrari dashboards to embed video and telemetry.

BTW - The problem there is the speed of the bus - It seems to work at a smog test station but we failed miserably trying to feed it to the TM - Never really did figure out why though....

+1 - My VC hillclimb video from last year: http://vimeo.com/4443638

I'll send you the properties file for it if you like :) [Sorry about the throttle sensor getting overloaded - We suspect that WOT generates a higher voltage when the engine is running than just ignition on - Or, it's a bad channel on the Traqdata.]

    Cheers,
    Ian

    You're both welcome!

I'm assuming you found the black/brown wire? Behind the passenger seat? In an unused connector?

I actually forgot to put a "use at your own risk" disclaimer in my original response :)

BTW, the comment on it taking forever wasn't about doing it - That took less than an hour. It was finding the ECU pinout's and acquiring the WSM on CD that took the time - Why do they want to keep this stuff "secret"?

    Cheers,
    Ian

Ian - thanks for posting the tach connection and great video of the hill climb!

I am trying to do the same connection. Any tips on finding the wire? I looked behind passenger seat/under/etc but didn't see it. I am looking in a coupe.

    thanks

    Thanks!

Have you removed the "parcel shelf" behind the passenger seat? - I haven't got any pix unfortunately, but once you pull that cover off all will be revealed. It's mounted with 4 pretty big stainless steel Phillips head bolts. [Be very careful when putting these back as they're soft and easily cross threaded.]

There's a bunch of relays - one of which is for the brake lights which we tapped in to. On my car (an '02 360 F1 Spider btw) we found an unused, 4 pin connector just "laying" there doing nothing [This was confirmed by the WSM CD BTW] - One of the wires going in to it is the black/brown [Meaning black with a brown tracer btw] RPM signal wire - As I said on the Traqmate site, we tested it by simply "poking" the wire from the Traqmate RPM input into the appropriate pin on this connector - The Traqmate immediately read 520 RPM [Half of the real value, but that's a settable parameter in the Traqmate - IIRC, I set it to 4 cylinders and all reads correctly.] Once confirmed, we used a suitcase connector to tap into it - Easy-peasy!

BTW - This black/brown wire is all over the place - It goes to *lots* of places - Any of 'em *should* work.

I will say again however, "use at your own risk!" - I have no idea if the wire colors stayed the same across model years etc, or even if the connector is used in other models..... Having said that, I reckon, but don't hold me to it (!) that if you can find the connector, and it has the appropriately colored wire, give it a try - Worst case the signal's not there.....

    Good luck!
    Cheers,
    Ian

Ian - thanks for the details. I did get the shelf off and took a look and while I found an unused 4 pin connector but it does not have a black/brown wire in it. Mine is a 430 so it is probably set up slightly differently. I do appreciate the help -- thank you.

    +1

Now you've got a problem :( Ideally, you need your ECU pinout diagram - This lists what pin(s) have the data but is not widely available [Don't ask!] Then you need the WSM (on CD) that shows wiring colors, connectors, and where they go etc - It's actually very cool..... If you have a friendly tech nearby they typically have the CD & dongle required to open it (!) - You may get lucky and see RPM on your unused connector in there.

Or, you could buy one of those MSD transducers Peter mentioned! :)

    Cheers,
    Ian
