Want to plan a trip to Poland. Tickets are $300... Great!!! Then you click on the final price and its >$1000!!! $700 is taxes and fees?!!! Is there something I am missing? Are tickets to other countries taxed as much (in the US)? How about flying out of Canada? I haven't flown internationally in about 10 years, WHOAAA have things changed! Is this par for the course?!
I haven't personally been to Poland, but I did travel to Italy over a year ago. I don't recall taxes being that much. If it is, I can't imagine anyone wanting to travel overseas anymore.
Bo..... If airlines are still charging fuel surcharges that will be the biggest chunk of it. Went from Calgary to Rio de Janeiro in October, and I used someof my FF miles so it was a free ticket in theory, after I paid $500 of "fees and taxes" that is........had I paid cash it would have been $1,500 round trip. There is probably a few $$ worth of "departure taxes" (fees charged by airports to fly out of them, usually 3rd world ones) in your ticket as well. I actually made a thread here *****in' about this. Sucks eh ?
It's sort of a game... there is no ticket for $300. The ticket costs around $1k but they put that it's $300 + tax to lure you in. There can be minor variations based on what airport you fly into and such, but there likely won't be a major difference going elsewhere and driving into Poland. It's sort of like listing that you can buy a house for $499/mo. But that price doesn't include loan interest, insurance, PMI, taxes, etc, etc. the low price sounds good, but isn't anything attainable.
Recently booked air travel to Rome including a ticket for my infant son who was to sit on my lap. The infant ticket is basically free but they even added the surcharges onto his ticket. So his free ticket ended up being $500, nearly the price of mine. So, the only sensible thing to do was to just buy him his own seat instead.
