I am going to Paris in March for a little over a week to see the gf. I want to take her somewhere outside of France for a couple of days while I am there and I was wondering what websites/services you recommend I look into for booking flights or a train.

I have never utilized Europe's train system on my own so I honestly do not know where to start.

And as for flights, I have seen prices all over the map. I looked into leaving from Paris and flying over to Geneva and that came to only $200 for the both of us, yet other sights list it at $600. So clearly there are deals to be had, I am just unsure of where to look.

    What say you?

Also, any 2-night trip ideas you have would be appreciated!!!

    hi john,

from paris you can go to a lot of different places in europe

    london by train 2.30 hrs
    http://www.eurostar.com/dynamic/index.jsp

you can fly to italy (roma, venice ...), or spain, czech republic, austria....

you can book before to leave and the subway is not that difficult to use in paris (i don't mention taxis in paris because of bad experiences with drivers looking at the map to drive you where you want)

    have a nice trip

what time in march.. could sneak down to the geneva auto show too! ha

    http://www.tgv.co.uk/
is the fast train all over france, although you need to book now, looked into some random dates in march from paris to geneva and prices were all over the place, (as it is with most trains in europe it seems) from £12 a person to £50 a person for 1st class($24-$100) which isnt that bad compared to englands ticket prices!!!

also dunno if you have checked swissair www.swiss.com but i flew from london to geneva and back on the same day last year for the auto show and it only cost me $75 on a friday too. and if you call them they give you better deals instead of there website.

www.airfrance.com www.easyjet.com www.flybaboo.com > the two last ones are low costs.

Otherwise, the train system is very good in france, often late but theres no such mess as in Great Britain. www.voyagesncf.com i think is the website, you can choose english. and you have a passenger's guide in english. By train from france you can go to England, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy (i did it once, it was very picturesque). Choose 1st class tho, less harrasment.

TGV has good prices and goes to Lausanne/Geneva/Zurich(3.5 hours). I went from Lausanne to Modena by train, 3.5 hours. Pretty cheap too, even for first class.

I've traveled from Paris to Florence and all through Italy via train. Eurail Pass is the way to go if you're going to be doing a lot of train travel. This site is INCREDIBLE:

    http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/international_guests.shtml

It will give you customized timetables in pdf form (and a bunch of other formats too).

When I went on my honeymoon in Europe, we flew into Paris and out of Rome, and used a 2 country Eurail Pass for everything in between. I planned out the route, then I went to Die Bahn (the site above) and looked up the timetables for the dates/times. I then called up the Eurail people and put together an itinerary... it definitely helped to already know the train numbers and times. One thing to keep in mind is that you'll probably have to pay extra for an upgraded room if you're doing an overnight train ride.
