I've often enjoyed the Bayerischer Hof Hotel in Munich. Nice location in the old part of town. As for Salzburg the great choice there would be the Hotel Goldener Hirsch. Haven't been to Vienna. Viel Gluck (Good luck)!

I am from Munich, lived there all my life until I moved to the states. What are your interests? You should definitely check out Auto Koenig, official Lambo and Ferrari dealer. I think they have a showroom in Munich now. Their main showroom is in a town/village called Anzing to the east of Munich. It's a short drive on the Autobahn in a very nice and quiet location. That's where I saw an Enzo last year when I visited my family. You can also PM me if you want.

    Hello MDshore348,

I can give you some tips for Munich. What is your favor? Culture? Traditions? Bavarian food?

There are also very interesting things for example "Deutsches Museum". It is the biggest technical museum of the world http://www.deutschesmuseum.de/e_index.htm.

The castles of "KÖNIG LUDIG II. in the area between Munich and the Alps. Very nice - but I'm not sure if they are open in December. I could ask for you.

In some extent Munich is stamped very italian. The next point. In December it is often cold in Munich - but it is not sure that we have snow in December.
You like christmas markets? There are a few very nice outside of Munich, for example in Regensburg (approx. 100 km from Munich City). Very nice a christmas market in the patio of the castle of the Turn & Taxis Family http://www.thurnundtaxis.de/frs_home.html . Fantastic flair. A very importent thing. Visit a christmas market always when it become dark. The flair is greater.

Ask me what you want to do and what you want to know. No problem.

    Best regards from Munich

I guess if you say Salzburg and Munich sightseeing I have to state the obvious: When I lived near Rosenheim I always had to take visiting friends to the Salzbergwerk in Berchtesgaden and to the Eagles Nest (Kehlstein). The Salzbergwerk is a giant salt mine underground - it's really geared up for tourists but I never tired of taking people there. Suitable for winter too, I guess, as it's all underground. No comment on the Eagle's Nest for obvious reasons, but the trip in a coach up the mountain and a ride in a golden elevator inside a mountain is worth the trip! Both can be done on the same day.

If you go to the Deutsches Museum say hello to my aircraft models! ;)

Auto Salon Singen is not toooo far away (seen from outer space) and is a used car dealer that has to be seen to be believed. They have a website.

The Munich Kaufingerstrasse is great for shopping with a large department store every 50 metres and I find it quite pleasing to the eye especially when there's snow on the ground.

If you are, in any case, transiting between Munich and Salzburg you can give Rosenheim a visit. Very clean, traditional German town centre, some nice shops, a Ferrari dealer in town (near the railway station), they have also a Christmas Market, etc., etc.

We spent a long weekend in Munich for Christmas last year arriving the last day of the Christmas market. Having been there before it was great to be back. We had Christmas dinner at the Ratskeller in Marienplatz, also ate/drank at the Hofbrau Haus and a few other places. If taking family, the large department store in Marienplatz had an exceptionally nice display with enormous Steiff (my favorite bears) animals in all the windows. We had a train pass so for the heck of it went to Starnberg and enjoyed a wonderful walk about the lake and great food late in the day while enjoying a beautiful view of the Alps. We went to the zoo again too - it's very nice. The Christmas eve service at the Dom cathederal at Marienplatz is breath-taking - standing room only - no where else would you hear a dog bark during a church service. The German people are the greatest - we've been to many restaurants in various locations in Germany that have Hunde-Bars - even the Holiday Inn where we stayed in Munich had one at the entrance to the hotel restaurant. Gosh, I am almost talking myself into going again this Christmas! Enjoy your trip.

Wow, you'll have a great time! My last trip to Germany, Rome & Vienna was last November. There was still one outdoor Bier Garten in one of the squares. Really cool town! If you are into beer, then go to HB! It's a traditional German Bier Hall. Really fun, good litre biers!

My fiance and I went to check out the castle they modelled the Disney castle after and the Palace across the valley that King Ludwig also owned. So you can do plenty of day trips / tours from there. If you want to see some sobering history, you can go tour / walk Dacau.

Any help I can give you, let me know.

As said, I was born and raised in Munich and I absolutely love it. Having been to many cities in Europe I can honestly say that Munich is by far the best. Very nice people, charming scenery, clean big city that still feels very personable. I've never really been one to go out much, so I can't help you there. Too bad the Kunstpark Ost doens't exist anymore. It used to be the biggest Disco/Bar/Concert area in Europe.
As far as the Xmas market goes, the store I used to work at, Hertie Am Bahnhof, always has nice displays (everything from Teddy Bears to a nice market). There is a good japanese restaurant in Schwabing, as well as a great Icecream place, which won't help much in the winter...
Other nice places near Munich include the newly opened Allianz Arena, home to soccer clubs Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich. Of course the Olympic Park with the tower (from where you can easily see the Alps and all of Munich) and the Olympicstadium.
The public transportation (S-Bahn) can be a pain in the winter, but still beats the car. I can guarantee you that you will love it. The city, the people, everything. Everyone I've always talked to who's been to Munich loved it. I miss Munich so much :(

Which kind of food do you prefer?

A small nice italian restaurant is the PERAZZO http://www.perazzo.de/indexe.htm . It is close to the old city. The owner is full of maranello blood. A lot of guests are Ferrari owners.

In the late morning we here in Munich have a traditional food. We call it "Weisswurst & Weißbier". Translation. White sausage and white beer.
One of the best adress for it

    Gaststätte Großmarkthalle
    Kochelseestr. 13

    open only on Mo-Fr: 7-17 h, Sa: 7-13 h

One new attraktion is the Schrannenhalle. It is open 24 h. Very nice place - directly at the Viktualienmarkt. http://www.schrannenhalle.de/

Do you need some suggestions for a hotel?

    Hello from Munich,

Nice to find this thread on my home town here! Well, you asked also for some sightseeing stuff nearby. My recommendation is to drive to the village Bad Toelz (Bad Tölz) about 40 minutes south of Munich. Be sure to take the 'small' road from Gruenwald south - much nicer than the Autobahn! It's a very nice small town with a lovely pedestrian area built upwards on a hill from the river Isar. They have a really great Christmas market there too! Then take the Road from Bad Toelz to the beautiful Tegernsee-lake nearby. It will lead you through beautiful Bavarian countryside and lots of nice small villages. Drive around the Tegernsee lake (about 40 minutes) and be sure to eat at 'Gut Kaltenbrunn' near Gmund (there is a sign leading you there from the road). It has an absolutely great view over the lake and great food too!

In Munich-city, one of my favorite restaurants is 'Das Alte Hackerhaus' in the Sendlinger Strasse, close to the Marienplatz. Everyone I took there loved it! Of course, all tourists love the world-famous Hofbrauhaus as well - be sure to visit this one too! If you like to see expensive shops, check out the Maximilianstrasse. Unfortunately, there will be few to none Ferraris there in December: Our 'exotics-season' runs only from about April until the end of October. There are hardly any driving around in the winter time, except if Porsches are your thing - these are around all over the place - year round!

Another sightseeing tip is to have a look at the Nymphenburg Palace in Munich (Schloss Nymphenburg). It really is a must-see and you can have a nice walk in the huge palace gardens and visit the smaller palaces there too!
Trust me, you'll love this place!

Just let me know if you need any broschures on Munich: My wife works at the tourist office and would be happy to send you some! Since I won't check this thread every day, you might want to send me an e-mail on [email protected] or a pm through FerrariChat with your home address.

Well, I hope my tips were helpful for you and I wish you a very pleasant stay in our great city and its beautiful surroundings!

    Ciao,
    Lars Theunissen
