Greeting all. First post here. I just purchased a 488 and have a question on the supplied trickle charger. When I attempt to plug the magnetic end to the back of the car it does not stay on. I assume there is a magnet but it will not stay connected. I see how there is a small guide piece but the darn things just falls off. Two questions.

    1. Is there a trick here or could the magnet go bad?
    2. Can I use a CTEK and plug it into the cigarette lighter in the center console similar to how I keep my Porsche charged? Or do I need to get some clips and tie directly into the battery to charge?

    Thanks for your insight!

    Best,
    Adam

the magnet can not go bad. It is a circular connector, sometimes you have to twist it a bit in the horizontal plane for it to lock on. When it locks you hear a click and the first few orange lights on the charger light up (on the ctek version). The charger connector tail is a bit flimsy, and the back of it can fall off but this does not stop it working.

I would pursue getting it to work correctly, you can’t use the centre console cigarette lighter as it is not powered when car is off.

Perhaps take a photo of the tail and the connector on the car so we can see what is going on and perhaps help more?

Check the magnetic pigtail for metallic debris. That will prevent the pigtail from attaching to the car.

Thanks for the replies. I tried to connect the magnetic end and it does connect but it hangs off the car and is not fully seated on the base or plastic piece attached to the car. The green light is blinking so maybe it's working?

The other strange thing is that the charger itself says "Lithium" on it. I thought the 488 has an AGM battery? Is this what your charger looks like? Maybe they gave me the wrong charger?

Well you should check to see if you have a lithium battery then …

I thought I saw someone post that the magnetic polarity for the connectors might be reversed for the lithium charger and cars that have factory lithium batteries. Not sure if the voltage connectors are reversed too. But that would explain why a lithium charger doesn’t attach to the car.

Interesting. I called the dealer where I purchased the car and they are going to send me a new charger.

I checked the battery and I definitely have an AGM battery and not a lithium. Dealer probably just gave me the wrong trickle charger.

Thanks for all of the replies!
