Just had my flywheel serviced (professionally), and am replacing the triple shaft seals and o-ring tonight before putting the bell housing back on. Have never done the triple seals myself before, and am fearful that they are too loose. Very tight to slide on the shaft, and as it reaches its max diameter before the 3- slots, the seal is stretched. When it goes into the slots, it is sloppy. Not tight like an o-ring. IS THIS NORMAL? I checked a 348 Clutch thread, and mine look like the attached photo....very loose in my opinion. Do they somehow get compressed as the shaft is pressed in?

Do I need to order a new set of seals again? I don't see any way that they wouldn't end up the same way.

Help, please. I've always heard of shaft seal leaks, and don't want this to be the reason.

    THANKS. John

I think I've seen a few people who just line up the seals and push the inner shaft in to compress them. I decided to use a hose clamp to compress them... see my post #49 on the first page of the thread I've been running on my 348 major service. Good luck with finishing your car up. PS - Don't overdo compressing them... just most of the way, and then carefully push the inner shaft in to finish the job.

Slide the tool over the seals once in place and let it sit for awhile. They will shrink back a bit and then gently bump the shaft with the heal of your hand to push it back in once the splines are aligned. Let it sit for 10.23 mins, pull the shaft back out and closely inspect the seals to look for any damage when the shaft was inserted. It Ferrari....Its not supposed to make any sence.

Mine looked similar...just carefully slid them back in and so far so good, 4k leak free miles :D

Well, carefully compressed the first seal. Tap, align, tap, align....TAP. CRAP....first one in nicely, second one caught off kilter, and cut. DAMN. Re-use one of the old ones. Second one...tap, align..tap. OK. Now number three, which is an old one because I tore the initial attempt with new#3 at sliding on the shaft.

Oh, well....I am going to put it all together anyhow. Start her up because its a nice day, and call FOD or Ricambi for another set to put on this week.

This was my first experience with these damned things....now I know why folks order two sets of triple seals and hope to get away with three good ones.

Ah, the joys of Ferrari ownership. At least I have learned some tricks for next week...just wish these weren't always such "expensive" lessons. Three triple seals and an o-ring. $43bucks. Priceless.

I have another set in stock. I will figure out my days honey-do chore list in the next hour and let you know if I will be down that way.

BIG Thanks to Dave (going in to the shop on a Saturday, no less)... I am now in possession of another set of triple seals ! (and one spare - which, I am proud to say that I will be RETURNING TO SCUDERIA RAMPANTE proudly on Monday. The seals went on fine, no rips, tears or cuts. Not easy, but now having a bit more experience with them -- they are on.

    Now to the flywheel....

    THANKS AGAIN, DAVE.

Splines lined up. Flywheel and bell housing in place. Got within 1/2 inch gap all around, and then had to get "rough". Funny, all the tools in the garage, and what gets you to closure is lying on your back, and kicking with your Size 10 Timberlands to get this all the way on...

But, regardless of the HOW, its on there. Job done.
