Hello members. Tough question for you (and very subjective, so let's all hold our tempers during this one). In your opinion, just WHERE does the infamous and legendary ferrari name rank in the list (1 top, to 5 last) among greatest race cars in the last 80 years, even though ferrari does not go back to the 1920's, except as a leader in the race team at Alfa Romeo (oops, I gave one away). Please name your other 4 in the order you believe.
guess we can omit names like Auto Union, which were very short term, but then again , so was Cobra, right? Lets have fun!

i'd have to say number one... One of the reasons for that is what you already said - Ferrari doesn't go back 80 years, and they've always been a small company comparitively, yet they still kick ass...

NNO, you've got to understand the history that surrounds your passion, to truely understand and appreciate it.

I would say, in no particular order
    Alpha, as you mentioned.
    Ferrari
    Porsche
    Jaguar
    Aston

NNO, with responses like yours, is "go stand in the corner for 15 minutes" an appropriate response? If you don't care, don,t respond. Simple.

Some of us carry a passion for Ferrari, and really don't care about other racing team, and where they stand. You asked a question, and got an answer. Even if you don't like the answer, there is no need for you to be rude.

    Thanks, Milton...

Pippo, i wasn't trying to be crass or rude or anything like that... But there is some truth in my statement... i think the other teams that were mentioned by Shiggins and that have competed and do compete with Ferrari are great teams and have made great achievements... but i'm really not interested in them... Even when it comes to Ferrari's race history, i'm not up on the facts... i'm a die-hard fan of Enzo's racing success' byproduct - his road cars... Now, put me behind the wheel of an F1 car or a 333 SP or an FXX, and that's a different story... :)

    after careful consideration.....
    1. bugatti
    2. alfa romeo [include A.L.F.A]
    3. mercedes [include benz]
    4. miller [include offenhauser]
    5. auto union

i really don't think ferrari [car] deseves to be in the top five...i'd be interested in anyone's opinion why it should....one might note that ettore bugatti, harry miller and ferdinand porsche were not only notable personalities but great innovators and designers in the world of motorsport that produced winning cars at a time when there wasn't much of a knowledge base to work from...if i recall the " golden age of racing" was pretty much over by the time enzo started making cars...[and i'm not so sure we'll see another golden age with what i see these days.]

Wow. Interesting. OK, I am not mad or anything. I said it would be subjective, didn't I? Thanks for all of your opinions! Alfa was responsible for dominating the racetrack wins in the "golden age" in large part due to its racing team leader being Enzo himself. Enzo himself once said (sometime in the 40's) "the only cars worth anything in racing are Alfa and Bugatti). Thanks for the tip on auto union becoming Audi. Pls educate me on Ford. Ford???

The Ford Motor Co. was founded when investors agreed to finance Henry Ford if he could build a car that would win a race. You can see that car in the Henry Ford Museum. For 100 years Ford has competed and won at Indy, F1, Le Mans, FIA sports car Champs, Bahia 1000, Monte Carlo rally, World Rally, NASCAR, NHRA, etc., etc.

Not since General Patton rolled into Europe had France seen anything like this...

it would be interesting to compare the fortune ford spent to beat ferrari to the depression dollars ford spent on the miller-fords to "win" indy in 1935..the figures paid to miller and preston tucker are well known but i've never seen the actual internal amount spent...i believe that from day one ford was more interested in the production cars sold on monday due to the races won on sunday...

also; it escapes me just what purpose built "racing" cars bentley campaigned when bentley was still bentley ?...i recall their bread and butter was high end street and sporting cars which [i thought] was what the famous competition cars were based on.anyone?

one must remember that from the early days of ettore bugatti winning races was the priority and the sale of brescias actually funded the development of the t-35....bugatti was also famous for selling exact copies of his grand prix cars [as well as the actual race winning cars] to the public...can you imagine ferrari offering current turn-key f1 cars to any and all of the competing teams ??

    Napolis,
Thanks for info on Ford. So how come though, Ford is not included in the top 10 most expensive cars ever sold? 3 are alfas, 3 ferraris, mercedes and 1 bugatti.
Now can you really call a cobra a Ford?? I mean he had a hand in it, but it was not completely a Ford. If Ford is so great, and I believe they deserve recognition, why are their race cars barely mentioned in the circles of high end collector cars like the ones I mentioned? Pls advise with your comments. Thanks!

    Napolis,
Thanks for reply and Ford history info. But how come though,in the top 10 most expensive cars ever sold, Ford cars are basically nowhere mentioned. Included are 3 alfas, 3 ferraris, 2 mercedes, a bugatti, and a cobra. Now can you really call a cobra a ford if he only had a hand in it? I dont know. Pls advise as I welcome your input. Thanks.
