Given how easy it is to disconnect the odometer on 360 and before models, it makes you wonder how many of these Ferraris are true mileage, I really find it hard to believe 10 year old cars have only been driven 10,000 miles or less when the odometer can be disconnected in less than 10 minutes with the appropriate tools. It really shows as well, a large % of the F355 and 360's I look at show wear on the bolts needed to access the appropriate places to disconnect the odometer (not going to specifically say where even though it's not hard to figure out)

Point of this post? Just food for thought when you look at all these "low mileage" cream puffs for sale.

Wear and tear show on more than just the odometer

    Not a new topic here.

I'm sure a lot of them have been tampered with, and a lot of them haven't. It's also true that Ferraris are second or third or fourth cars for most of us. I drive mine less than 2000 miles a year, and the car sat in an Atlanta collection for about 10 years during the '90s, so the mileage showing passes the 'common sense test'.

The only thing I'd take away from the odometer controversy is that I wouldn't pay a big premium for an ultra-low mileage Ferrari. As you point out, it would be easy to fake.

Hell, the odometer on the 355 is a badge of honor. I'm proud to rack up the miles.

I've had my 348 for 2.5 years, and have put about 4,000 miles on it. Higher than the average for my car, but I know it sat for about 5 years.

True. Combine that with service records(or lack of), Carfax, number of owners, vibe of current owner etc. and the pieces to the puzzle come together.

Dr. Tommy just turned 100K miles on his 308. I think Tillman! is right there as well. John Corbani's 150K-mile (?) Dino 246 was featured in a recent Forza article. Etc. etc.

That could still be unreliable. If somene disconnects the odometer for half the year, between service visits, who would know? Maybe the "vibe of current owner" is a clue, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.

If the car has had only one owner, there is huge opportunity for odometer tampering because it would have only one Carfax transaction. A car with multiple owners is a much safer bet. Think about it: if I've had the car for 10 years, that's a long time and allows for a lot of variation in mileage. If the same car changed hands every two years, you would have 5 owners and as many changes of title where the current mileage was recorded and could never be plausibly 'rolled back'.

What about a check engine light? I know that if the odometer/speedometer gets disconnected on my '96 Accord it illuminates a check engine light and gives a code for disconnected cluster or something like that. Would this happen on a 360 or 355?

I have no idea to be honest with you, experience with F430 is limited to basic bolt ons which is why I specified 360 and earlier. Maybe someone else more experienced can answer the question though.
