Trying to Find Relatives in Antwerp

I live about 25km away from Antwerp and know some people who live there... I can't promise you any positive results but I will ask around a bit, to see if I can find you some info later this week!

as i don't know flamish, the local language, i can only give you some hints. as there are many different schrams in antwerpen, i would concentrate on the link between a tavern and the name "schram". first of all, using the yellow pages, i found out that the docks in antwerpen are quite big and i don't know enough about antwerpen to find out, which districts/precincts/zip codes of antwerpen are located around the docks (zip code 2030 for sure is).
secondly, i would check the commercial register of antwerpen for the name of schram and try to find out, if there's/was a commercial entity run by somebody with the name of schram, which relates to a tavern.
maybe that helps with your search.

 

I would just start calling the list. A lot of Belgian people speak English and maybe one of them can help you a lot faster.

Like he said, maybe it's best to call those people directly...
You might find a positive result faster then you expect....
If you find an adress of the tavern somewhere sooner I would be happy to check it out to see if it still exists too if you want...

Don't mean to hi-jack this thread but......I used to go to college here in England with a guy from Antwerpen, Lawrence Heylen. Apparently his grandfather used to own a cinema chain in the City.

Couldn't look in ya phone book could ya ?!

I live in Antwerp. Not in the centre of Antwerp, but I go to school near the "Groenplaats" in Antwerp. Which is very close to the dockx (or as we call it in dutch "de kaaien"). At the dockx there are very much café, bars, tavernes,... so that's pretty difficult. And what makes it even more difficult is the fact that many of them are taken over several times.

I'm just 20 years old, so I don't know which tavernes where at the dockx in antwerp in the 60's. But I will try to find more information.

 

I think the grandfather of the person you are looking for was the owner of the well-know "Cinema Roma", which ended in 1982. The very nice building of the cinema was empty from 1982 until 2002. Now the building is very nice restored by a private organisation.

The "Roma" cinema was not in the centre of Antwerp, but just outside in "Borgerhout". Here is the adres of the cinema:

The private organisation that owns the "Roma" now is called "Rataplan". Here is there website: http://www.rataplanvzw.be . The site is in Dutch, but their email adress can be found on the site. I'm pretty sure they speak English. Maybe they can bring you in contact with the Heylen-family.

When I went to college with this guy he was a few years older than the rest of us. He was a funny bloke who introduced us to France Gall, Marillion and Opel cars ! It would be fun to hook up again after......18 years !
