Hi all, I'm dealing with information overload so I thought I'd narrow it down and see if I can get enough input to make a decision. I'm dying to get my early production 575 (with center silencer) to sound alive, nothing obnoxious. I started with the valve bypass but it barely made a difference, due to the resonator I assume. My easiest and most cost effective next step is to buy the set of clean/used Tubi 575 mufflers I've been discussing with seller but I'm wondering if the resonator will allow them to deliver? Might anyone have a resonator equipped Maranello with only Tubi mufflers to either share their experience or possibly a video/audio clip? Fellow member shared this video, which I think sounds great, but I've no idea if it's just the mufflers and also don't know if car is resonator equipped. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
lol @ myself. I should have figured that the title wasn't all that original. I see at least half a dozen older posts with the same!
Option 1: If you want to keep the center resonator in place, go with an early set of Tubis (550). They are basically straight through (barely) mufflers, and will give you a nice growl, healthy idle noise without being too loud (as long as the center resonator is left in place). This is what I have on my 550, and I enjoy the sound. Option 2: Remove the center resonator and leave the stock mufflers in place. Option 3: Remove the center resonator and install a set of 575 Tubis (much more quiet than the early 550 Tubis).
I caution against option 3: That was how my 575 was when I purchased it and it was awful. It was very loud which in itself isn't a problem but the resonance made it frustrating. Everyone who has heard my car in person comments how it was by far the worst of all the setups I have run on my car.
Thank you both! I can't express how helpful all this is when I can't test or compare any of the options. Tubis seem to be the path of least resistance (Omar is aware of at least one other option that didn't turn out to be feasible). One available set is 575 specific but it sounds like they'll be more restrictive than earlier 550 units. If so, is it a significant difference? Obviously, I want to hear a more pronounced and deeper note.
@wheretheroadends When I bought my 550 it had first gen Tubi rear mufflers on it. The rest of the exhaust was stock, including the center resonator. The first gen Tubis are very loud and produced a terrible drone/resonance around 2k RPM, so I would not recommend them.
Update: I currently have access to a decent deal on 575 Tubis but best to decide soon. Also, my tech is recommending Larini Hi-flow cats when we get in for the manual conversion and a set of Fabio H pipes might become available before all this happens. Sounds like Fabio's H pipes and Larini cats are admired and proven but I'm concerned about the point/combination where car is too loud or out of character for what I want. I'm going for depth/tone & some burble...not volume. I also don't like the "open/straight pipe" sound for a GT. Hoping someone is able to share a video with any combination of the above, including the factory resonator that's currently on my car. Cheers all and thanks for all the input!
If you are looking for power gains, replace the over axle section with a true 2.5" diameter piping (Fabio might have it, otherwise have to fabricate the pipes). Replacing the stock center muffler also removes a crushed section of exhaust.
Yea that's exactly the part I will be selling in a few weeks. It was only rational to do it while doing the mufflers IMHO
Thank you both! Trying to absorb all this to see what makes most sense. It now looks like I'll first be in the shop around Dec for the next major and possibly a manual conversion.
Thanks Terry and I'd love to have this as an option. Knowing that I probably won't find a video or audio of what thess pipes sound like with factory mufflers (or Tubis that I might still have access to), I'll run it by my tech to see if he can help me make a decision. Please let me know how to get more info.
that’s the thing. I haven’t been able to find enough videos to get clarification. I was also considering Fabio’s H-pipe and valve controller with the stock mufflers. Just to get a little more sound. But I haven’t heard how it would sound or if it is enough. I am not sure if I want to spend the extra money to get both the H-pipe and mufflers. The valved mufflers are expensive.
Thanks for the offer buddy. Can you please send me the price? Do you think it will give any improvement in sound with the stock mufflers? My car has the central silencer as it is an early one.
Yes, but you are probably better off sourcing one directly from Fabio. Would cost quite a bit to ship from here to Denmark.
You just have to try and see what you like. Mine has had three separate systems, post 51797 so straight center pipes. 1st unvalved, 90 mm tailpipe (OEM 72 mm) Novitec SuperSport mufflers. Sounded glorious, but loud enough to wake the dead. Sold to 550 owner and replaced with OEM Superamerica HGTC mufflers. Good sound, but not quite F1 enough. Fitted Fabio headers and cats, along with Supersprint over the axle pipes and an H-Pipe. Sounds glorious with only a little resonance around 2500 rpm when pipes are cold. Will likely buy Fabio's mufflers next and sell the HGTC mufflers. Whatever you buy and do not like, there is usually someone else who will buy it and love it.
Yes. I have OEM straight centre pipes and had Tubi straight mufflers (now Fabio's valved) but that didn't suit how I'm using the car. The latter is now on another owner's Superamerica used mainly for short blasts.
Please let me know price as well but to clarify, you're getting some resonance with the H-pipe as well?
Now I’ve placed an order with Fabio for a H-pipe. This is the way I will go for now to see what it gives me. If it’s not enough I’ll build on that.
Payman- A little at 2500 rpm when the exhaust is cold. Goes away after it gets hot. Fabio H-pipe is sold to another FChatter.
