    Restaurant Opening
Lamborghini's Caffé Corsa Cruises Into Gulfstream Park By Lee Klein, Thursday, Mar. 11 2010 @ 8:30AMCategories: Restaurant Opening

Tonino Lamborghini, whose father Ferruccio brought us that dream of a sports car, has opened Tonino Lamborghini's Caffé Corsa at the new Village at Gulfstream Park in Hallendale.

Italian-born executive chef Paolo Del Papa, besides having the best name of any Italian chef in town, will be serving up homemade pastas, assorted salumi and cheeses, fresh salads, Neapolitan pizzas and traditional Italian desserts. Papa's signatures include penne alla Bolognese Lamborghini style, and branzino al forno with lemon artichokes and asparagus. Sommelier Massimiliano D'Agostino offers wines from various regions of Italy, as well as the Tonino Lamborghini brand. I was once given a tour of the Lamborghini vineyards, located in lush Umbria near Lake Trasimeno, by Ferruccio's daughter Patrizia (Tonino's half-sister). I have a feeling the two vineyards are not one and the same. The vineyards and winemaking facility that I visited, on the sprawling family estate called La Fiorita, produces over 800,000 bottles per year. I have two of them -- cool labels, which, as you probably know, should be a foremost consideration when purchasing wines.

There is also a Lamborghini car museum on the premises, in case you're thinking of visiting. Or you can travel to the Tonino Lamborghini Caffé Corsa in Hallendale, which is much closer. In fact, sipping the family wine might be the closest you'll ever get to tasting the thrill of a Lamborghini.

The menu focuses on everything Italian, and is brought to you by Chef Paolo formerly of the Bice Restaurant Group . You will appreciate the freshness of ingredients. The plates of cheeses, vegetables and sliced meats all shined for the “whisk you off to Italy” moment.

The salads were a nice twist from everyday classics. The thought of a tuna salad still evokes memories of eating a mayonnaise-laden salad, but their version Di Tonno brought together thinly sliced pieces of fresh tuna, arugula, cannellini beans and accented with a light, lemony dressing making for a very simple and clean salad.

Of course, they feature pizzas and pastas — each made from scratch. From the more classic pizzas like the Elettra with tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil to something a bit more unusual like the Vongole e Pancetta with clams, fresh ricotta, oregano, crispy bacon and broccoli rabe, you will be pleasantly satisfied. For pastas, we tasted the fettuccine with a mix of wild mushrooms and truffle oil. While it was tasty, I would skip this and go for the Butternut Squash Ravioli with butter and sage – a perfect combination of sweet and savory.

In addition, they offer a multitude of seafood dishes, all very fresh and cooked to perfection. You can be assured that you will receive top of the line ingredients when dining at Tonino.

They offer the same menu all day long, so you can stop by at any time of the day for a small bite or an extravagant meal and they will treat you like family. And if by chance, you do own that Lamborghini, your meal at Tonino is gratis.

Tonino Lamborghini is located in The Village of Gulfstream Park at 501 South Federal Highway in Hallandale 305.456.4500

It surely didn't seem like it after our visit last night. Although they did offer "salad", that's about as close as they came to the write up. A small dinner salad with a few greens and a few thin slivers of cheese for ten bucks doesn't calculate, not in my book anyway. :(
