This morning, the 300+ cars at the monthly "Caffeine & Octane" gathering were upstaged by the most unusual vehicle I've ever seen at a car show: a Tupolev aerosled!

Designed to rescue cosmonauts in the event that their capsule came down in some remote area like Siberia, it is an unusual beast to be sure. While not an aircraft, it is built by an aircraft manufacturer and is powered by an air-cooled radial engine, so it can belong on this forum.

The owner tried repeatedly to start the engine, but he never could quite get it to catch.

Is this the same one that was auctioned at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale a couple years ago?

That prop is really intersting. It isn't counter rotating, but both blades are bolted together and one is following the other. One issue with air boats is that you don't want big diameter, but you want high efficiency. This "biplane" configuration is very interesting and appears to be an advantage at the low forward speeds that these boats travel at.

The engine, BTW, is a derivative of the AI-14 engine that powered the Yak-18 and the PZL Wilga, as well as a number of Kamov helicopters. It is rated at about 350 HP.
