I have been looking for a late 80s early 90s 930, or a RUF Porsche and I was wondering what to expect as far as extra maint issues on a Turbo charged car, versus a normally aspirated one like a late 80s Carrera G50. Do they need an oil cooler? Is it important to limit the charge to 0.9 bar or something like that? Thanks.

The 964's turbos 90+ are very reliable and need absolutely nothing additional except a 1.0 bar boost spring and exhaust. Maintenance is not horrible. Valve adjustments, oil changes and plugs are the main piece of maintenance. I cant stress this enough, make sure you get a thorough PPI by a very reputable Pcar shop that works on aircooled Pcars. If not, you will be facing major expenses if the motor is not solid or properly maintained. They (aircooled) turbos are some of the most rewarding cars I have ever driven. They are raw, powerful and tons of fun. They will bite you if you push the car beyond your own talent limits. I have met a handful of professional drivers that can get 100% out of these cars on the track. After 5 years in mine I was fairly comfortable at 85-90%, anything above that the pucker factor was a bit too much for me. The 993, 996 and 997 AWD turbos are cupcakes to drive fast compared to the single turbo RWD aircooled Pcars.

i have owned my current 930 for 9 years. it is my third 930. it is to me, the one car i think defines me as a car lover. not my ferraris...nothing else but my turbo!!!!

my car began as a very fast machine but over the years it has become a monster while remaining largely stock appearing. an icon of a car and the german version of the 427 cobra!!!

enjoy your hunt in pursuit of the right car. don't skimp and buy the cheapest...buy a great one and you will be a happy man. the prices range hugely with each price range being easily justified. buy quality and not price.

You're going to go thru your brake pads, tires, and rotors, a lot more often...........but that us because it is just a lot more fun than the regular car is.

As already stated the maintenance is not much different. If you find a good car. A 1986-1989 Carrera/964/993 Turbo will get expensive if the turbo needs replacement or major service. Complete service history is very important.

    I'd say look for a 1991-1993 964.

My cayenne tts needs one every 600 or so, consistent with the turbo before it.

If the yellow 996 GT2 goes on sale let me know. It doesn't have any of the carbon package, but I might be interested.

    As a 964 T owner, I respectfully disagree.
Any way you look at it, Turbos are money pits.
The earliest 964 T's are 20 years old. Stuff wears out. If you desire a car where everything works it will get expensive. The biggest potentially expensive issue is the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. Troubleshooting it is very time consuming. Climate control stuff is also pricey. Blower motors wear out (the 964T has four of them) and are unbelievably expensive.
    Budget $2000/year for parts alone.
